The AI Music Race is Over

Is there any truth in what’s being reported about fewer people drinking alcohol these days? It might sound like an unrelated question but drink sales are what a lot of small venues depend on and if it’s true it’s only going to cause more venues to close. I’m teetotal these days so not helping the situation! It seems like there’s a number of circumstances coming together to make the future for small bands look quite bleak

FWIW I have used Suno to write songs - it’s very good at it. I haven’t uploaded anything as it doesn’t really feel like my work. It’s not going anywhere - the genie is out of the bottle. I just hope it doesn’t stop younger people picking up instruments and writing and performing music themselves.

Me too. I was at a pub gig mid week and paid £6 for a can of Guiness Zero. I felt I was doing my bit!

Yeah, it’s a thing. It’s slower to hit where I live because there’s such a thing as beer tourism and people who drink come here to drink because of our VERY high concentration of breweries. We also have a LOT of venues for music. You can find something any day here. Most days you can find live music with no tickets or cover. Sometimes it’s fun to just walk around town and listen for where there are musicians and just walk in to check out what sounds good.

The NA trend is being noticed. Every venue has growing NA beverage lists (and many are getting into making their own) and pretty much everybody offers food. So if you’re a teetotaler, you can still support the venue (and the musician the venue is paying) through buying stuff.

As for the AI business - hard pass on the AI involvement in music writing. I also am a minimal consumer of streaming music platforms where the AI slop is likely to appear. AI is a tool best used for analyzing, not creating.

AI can rot for all I care.

The worst that can happen with any music is that it will be ignored. We never know what may inspire others.

That said, not all performed music is good. Whatever it takes to make good music is fair game - what is good or bad will always be subjective. When it comes to AI music there is a lot of corksniffery and prejudice.

this is where I will adamantly disagree. “bad” music made 100% by a person with no AI involvement will always be better than “good” AI-generated slop.
