For my 60th birthday this year, I treated myself to a new guitar and a housegig by the one-and-only Johnny Dowd. His band came and stayed with us for a couple of days, and I played with him in my living room.
I had a blast
I became aware of Johnny back in the early millennium, seeing him perform multiple songs on Jim White’s excellent BBC documentary Searching for the wrong-eyed Jesus. (Watch it- It’s fabulously weird!)
The other week I saw a FB post, mentioning that Jim is touring the UK next Feb.
He signed my guitar a couple of years ago at a gig in Manchester and I still have the cap he wore on stage that night.
No time to waste- I contacted his UK tour manager and offered to organise accommodation and help sort out a gig.
To cut a long story short, he (and his band) are coming to stay with us and play a gig in the local arts centre next Valentine’s Day
I was a bit taken aback when the agent told me I’d have to organise the ticket sales website and promote the event-
Steep learning curve, but looks like we’re getting there…
Never ceases to amaze me how you can just make things happen if you ask
Mostly long periods of doing nothing with short bursts of panic, I think
I presume the day itself might be a bit stressful, printing out who bought tickets, sorting out the door and security, organising soundchecks, and correctly sorting out all the M&Ms by the right colour
All I need now is the sex and drugs…
Been meaning to catch up on this one as the title was a little interesting and I know you’ve been on your jollies. So I was anticipating the usual entertaining Larsen travelogue, duly wanted to put aside some time to watch it.
Well I could not have been more wrong. What a stunt to pull that one of Brian, you certainly got more front than Sainsbury’s but heck you keep pulling it off. After Mr Dowd what a coup to not only provide digs for Jim as well as setting up a local gig as well. You are one amazing person ! I know if you don’t ask you don’t get but I reckon your confidence and general and wonderful demeanour can’t but hook these folk in. Huge congrats and hope it all goes to plan.
Now I am going to have to tear myself away from BLIM and take a rerun of SFTWEJ which was a great watch the last time you promoted it. Thx !
Good luck @brianlarsen, sounds like quite the challenge!
It’s a very cool job but it EATS time!
I’ve been promoting http://www.bprock.be in various ways and it has taken a considerable amount of my life already
Wow Lieven cool ,and a very varied line up and playing with your band too but I can imagine that it is eats your time ,this is a big one .
Why not created some advertising here, quite a few Belgians here and border residents, and every person who comes to see you or someone else through here is one extra happy person…
I wish you a great day and don’t forget to share if you are happy with the outcome
@TheMadman_tobyjenner
Aw, thanks Big Man- That’s so generous of you
After Johnny and Jim, the other two from the documentary I wouldn’t mind getting are The Handsome Family and David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower and Woven Hand)
I’ve already had a brief (unrelated) fb interaction with Brett Sparks (HF), so that’s a long shot. I might balk at David- He seems ‘way out there’
@LievenDV Maybe we need to start a separate category for members who organise musical events!
I’ve just spent the morning discovering a superb guitarist that @NicoleKKB just engaged for a charity gig that she organised. Check it out here
That’s an impressive poster for the BPRock festival you’re organising-
And it’s free
Second on main stage- that’d be my spot of choice!
I hope you get someone to record footage that you can share with us here.
Good luck at the weekend
