The Madman's Learning Log

Blimey, thats an impressive list. I wonder if I would make more progress with something similar

Only if you actually stick to it Trevor !

I have done this at the start of each year since rolling up here and the mileage varies greatly. In the early days it was aligned with the old BC and IM then consolidating both and I stayed on track pretty consistently. In recent years I’ve not done so well and been dragged around by the odd rabbit but I’ve regained a little bit of self belief in what I can actually achieve, so I am hoping this year will be more focused. Time will tell of course,

Hi Toby,
For a madman you are terribly well organized :sunglasses: ,…I know it’s not set in stone, but still :sunglasses:,…
My planning for next year playing is : 1 Intro of a certain song and for the rest,… a lot of guitar playing
Greetings, and good evening :beverage_box:/

Warm up and Development, these sections looks seriously massive. My list is not even half long as this one .

Not always in the same session Radek. I’ll do the core stretches then cherry pick some of the other items. But if you consider spreading each section into 3 sessions across the day, it doesn’t look so bad !

I red the description how you smartly divided practice sessions into various pieces focusing on different subjects. A true scholar .

That’s a pretty impressive and structured plan, Toby. Retirement certainly suits you! :slightly_smiling_face:

Are you still using your wobble board for the nueroplasticity exercise?

Wow Toby, you def have the record for the longest running thread Dec 2021 and counting. I see some of your earlier posts here and I am going back to sharpen up my scales again. It seems I learn then don’t save to long term memory. I am hoping to improv and add flavor to my playing this year. I love how you documented your learning log in a colorized chart. You da man!

Cheers Dean. Early days on the balancing exercises and I’ve been neglecting it when learning stuff that’s a bit tricky. I started an new Blues rock soloing course at the weekend, so there are some section that may benefit. Lets see how it goes !

It actually hails back to 2016, when it started as my Roadcase on the old forum, so its definitely a slow boiler. As for the scale memorisation, best to practice slow and focus on just one pattern until that is complete memorised and count the intervals out as you play them.
They will always be in the same relative position (adjust for B string) so when you learn “new” patterns, you’ll see they are all the same, just starting from a different fret. For fingering and picking work on melodic patterns eg 123 234 345 456 567 671etc (Intervals) 1234 2345 3456 4567 5671 or alternate intervals 1324 2435 3546 4657 5761 that kind of things. Those will more closely resemble melodies and licks, opposed to just running up and down the scale.

Hey Toby, I think this might be the first time I’ve commented on your LL? When I clicked on it I was around halfway through, up to around post 100, but must have got distracted at the time and moved onto other things.

You’ve definitely been a prolific contributor over the years, with loads of recordings shared. And loads of guitars accumulated! Note to self, don’t ask Toby on how to cure GAS (juuuuuust one moooooorreeee).

Looks like 2023 is going to be a big guitar year for you! Loads of stuff to practice. Loads of songs to work on. Will be great to see the videos of new songs and techniques mastered as you go on.

I’m pretty jealous of the amount of time you get to practice too, being retired!

Probably a couple of hours, some times three but as I mentioned earlier in tend to alternate disciplines on different days or I might do the Blues “lead” type work in the morning and the fingerstyle bits later in the day and song work in the evening. But it is all slow steady progress.

Yeah retirement is handy ! But being houndless has also freed up a little time as well, so I am making the most of it for now but things could change if we get pup come spring time. Then everything is out of the window, so plans will be reviewed. You seem to be doing very well on the hours you put in, so keep doing what you are doing.

I’m already looking forward to those pictures , … especially if you manage to capture the puppy while she is gently sucking / chewing on your guitar,… you will be buried under the tumbs up,…
It is the best medicine for the loss of your precious dog :sunflower:

Greetings,…
