Thanks Radek, it was a nice exercise from the Live Theory sessions and once I got the initial framework done, I had to take it further. But I do learn a lot messing around in GuitarPro and writing scores (no formal learning just guesswork). Plus mixing and mastering on the DAW side can be therapeutic at times. All good fun and a nice diversion when the fingers get too sore !

Although its is not supposed to be a rip roaring guitar piece or an impro=ed style. I want to expand on the 1/4 note melody. So once that is captured, as it’s just about playable non stop now, I’ll sit back and see how I can embellish each section, which will be a good exercise in itself. But all part of the learning process.

Hi Toby, that’s a really clear and structured way to record your progress. Maybe, I should start with something similar as well, before it gets too much of a load and I get too overwhelmed to even think of starting something similar 
?

Its certainly a useful reminder for looking back on progress and good to start early if you are going to do something similar. The first catalogue was a mammoth task, as I was using different recording platforms, Soundcloud, then YouTube and it covered a good few years. Created in MS Word then copied here.
The last two years have been much easier and allows me to take stock of where I am and plan where I am going. Which is the next task, then map out a plan.

So as already mentioned the year is drawing to a close and I have had time to reflect on what I feel has been a productive year. I am still not setting the tarmac/blacktop on fire but the progress has been slow and steady.
Thus it is time to lay down the road map for the new year and see where this journey takes me next.
But first its confession time.
Ever since Justin rebuilt the website, rewrote the Beginner and Intermediate Courses, interweaved the Blues Courses in the newly created Grade System, I’ve felt a bit lost and did not know where I was. The additional beginners lessons, then the new Grade 3 pretty much threw me out of kilter, So although I’ve been dipping in and out and cherry picking I still don’t have a scooby about where I fit in ! 
So first off for 2024 I am going back to ground zero and this time meticulously cover the new material and finally get my feet back on the path again. Again this will be slow and steady wins the day and I have no target time to complete this adventure.
Alongside that will be continued exploration and development and like this year it will be Blues and Fingerstyle focused but with a twist.
What I have discovered over the last, roughly 3 months of mainly fingerstyle playing, Solo Blues and Folk patterns, is complementary skills that are transferable across a variety of techniques and playing. And that has pretty much led to me formulating plans for the coming year.
There is method in the madness, honest.
The melody lines I have been learning in the acoustic solo Blues pieces can be used to provide useful and flowing links between licks when improvising.
The slightly faster or busy Folk Fingerstyle patterns, have improved my picking hand playing and that has been evidenced in some of the Solo Blues pieces and will be exploited further.
The focus on Blues Rock Soloing throughout the year has helped me develop my lick vocabulary and led to playing more complicated pieces, giving me a platform to learn longer solos, as previously planned.
The Blues Rock Soloing also triggered a eureka moment when I just went freestyle one day (see The Playground recording) but also learning a Knopfler style solo and discovered I could actually play much faster than I believed. And this is something that had held me back from attempting some of the classic Hard Rock, Heavy Rock and early Metal songs of my yoof. Giving me inspiration to finally build a proper foundation to play that style of song.
So that’s pretty much the framework for next year,
It may sound a lot but I have been practice/playing for a couple of hours each day. So the plan is to spend 30 minutes on each of the core developmental area and adding any items coming out of the Ground Up Review as required and if necessary creating a fourth dedicated slot for those techniques and skills.
So as Baldrick once said “I have a cunning plan” ! And yes there will be songs and the odd OM appearance.

Hi Toby, that sounds like a decent plan. Very structured again - like your retrospect. And with the different genres/styles you want to focus on, I’m sure, it won’t become boring 
.

Well Toby, it does sound a lot. Can’t wait for my retirement so I can practice a few hours each day. That’ll be in 31 years from now.
It’s been satisfying seeing your progress in 2023. I admire the structured practice sessions you’ve got going on, they’re really paying off. May 2024 bring you lots of joy and results.
