Hi Kevin, apoligises for the late reply. First of all I hope you’re doing well with Can’t Help Falling in Love…November is coming soon and I remember you wrote you wanted to play it for your wife on your Anniversary!

Thanks for the advice you shared…these are all aspects I will have to focus on soon or later to improve the quality of my playing and the sound of it…there’s so much to learn! My fingerpicking technique used to be quite bad and I made huge steps from the beginning. At the moment I feel my priority is my ear and being able to connect it to the instrument; after achieving some progress in this respect I will get back to refining techniques.

I think there’s absolutely nothing wrong to compare with others, but I hope you’re doing it constructevely when you say I’m progressing much faster than you are and that my avoyp can be inspiring to you. What I want to say is: focus on yourself, on what you feel is most important to your own learning and on what you can already do too :slightly_smiling_face:
And…we need to be indulgent with our pinkies…those of both hands!

Lol, I haven’t even started practicing Can’t Help Falling in Love. Maybe I’ll wait for next year - that’s the big one anyway - 40 years!

I’m curious as to whether you are self-taught, or have ever had formal instruction, either in person or online (yes, I know Justin is great, but not really geared toward classical guitar). I did a year of instruction with a real person, but then got laid off and decided to eliminate the expense. I’ve been thinking of joining CGC (Classical Guitar Corner) to get me from wandering about so much. I’ve fallen so much in love with Andrew York’s compositions that I find myself not wanting to learn anything else. And also, I don’t want to ingrain bad habits until they’re really hard to eliminate. I’m thinking getting back to a structured process could help. Would like to hear your perspectives on this. I don’t even do 45 minutes a day anymore, and sometimes go for a few days without lifting the guitar, and I feel like I need external motivation to really progress.

Hi Kevin, no I didn’t have in-person formal instruction and the only on-line courses I’m following are those from Justin and the video lessons that go together with Bradford Werner Classical Guitar Method Book; even if I’m having a break from Classical Guitar to focus more on training my ear, working out these kind of arrangements by myself and explore the fretboard…the acoustic fingerstyle seems to respond better to my own learning needs at the moment.

Absolutely, do that! Structured practice is really helpful when one feels like wandering and a bit demotivated…If you can stick to just a few items of focussed practice a day consistently you’re already improving even if you might not notice it straight away.

I know the CGC has a very structured website and I did a free download from it. My advice is once you start with one method to stick with it; the Werner’s was perfect for me because it starts from the very fundamentals and the single notes melodies, so that I never felt overwhelmed and super gradually built my understanding and skills to be able to play pieces.

Are you familiar with Justin’s Food for Thought series? If not I highly reccomend you go over the website and start some very good reading…your truest motivation is within you, not external and I wish to you those articles will help you the same way helped me to find it out!

Hi Deborah, I made a link to the radio on my phone screen so I can listen to it easily. I like the fact that I can read the title, the artist and year the song was released.
I’m afraid you’re right, so much commercials :frowning:

That’s fabulous Silvia. I’ve not heard it before and my life was worse off for it. Thank you. It sounds like a beautiful song to fall in love to.
