Too many guitars?

I’ve just found this video (it’s new on YT, too). A guitar store owner shares his views on the abundance of guitars on the market in general and at players’ homes, too. Looks like another contribution to the never-ending discussion on ā€˜how many guitars should I have’, or ā€˜do I need another guitar’, but there certainly is some wisdom to what he says.

What does 'there is an ā€˜over-abundance of guitars’ mean?
(Apart from obviously, he sells guitars and that makes his life more difficult )
He happily admits to owning 20+ guitars, 12 bases, 2 Hammond organs and 3 drumkits around the world, which he likes and bring him happiness.
If consuming/collecting really makes you happy, go for it

Right, but he also said ā€˜enjoy what you have’ and emphasized that, despite his large collection of various instruments, he doesn’t consider it necessary to be happy with making music… That’s what I meant by ā€˜some wisdom’, I certainly did not subscribe to all he said.

Haha, it’s hard to argue with anyone who advocates trying to be ā€˜happy with what you have’ in any sphere of life, but not really novel (or easy for many)

I took that as that there are many many choices out there. Cheap to expensive. They are all cool. If ya want some of ea. go for it.
I liked that he talked about looking for the good any any guitar. Though I’m not sure that I ever found any good in my 1st guitar, a harmony stella. Maybe there was something good, but I can’t remember anything I liked about it, other than, it was a guitar and I wanted to learn to play guitar. And that made me happy.

That’s where I have to land at. And I do like and enjoy what I have. While it’s not a large amount of gear, it fit’s my needs. I think the 3 of 5 guitars that I play regular all sound good. They play good and they look good. None are top notch guitars. No Les Pauls, no strats. But they are what I can afford, the amount of guitars I have is what I have room to store. The amount of guitars is enough to keep me from playing the same one over and over.
Not that that is bad either I don’t think. If I had only one, I’m of the notion that it would make me get the most out of that guitar. Learn the many sounds, tones I can get out of it. Having a lot of guitars, or better guitars I don’t think will make me a better player. There’s likely something I can get out of my gear that I’m not aware of yet. Perhaps leading to me playing better.

So, I agree, ya can’t have to many guitars. How many a person has is up to them and the circumstances that they operate within.
But not having a lot of guitars is cool too. I think having a few may lead me to being able to get the most out of the instruments that I have.

I’m just happy I have 1 guitar so I can make music. Or sometimes, in my case, learn to make music.
And to me, that’s where it’s at no matter if I have a lot of choice or only one choice.

fwiw, I likely do want more guitars. I must, I still look at the want ads to see if there’s something that I just really gotta have. What I’ve found is that the longer I play, the more persnickety I get in what I think I might need in a new guitar.
When I was just getting back into guitar, I could see me playing many of the guitars I looked at. Now, after 5 years in, I can skip over a whole lotta guitars and never look a them. I have started to understand of what type of guitar fills my needs.
And the ones I have seem to fill my needs.

Now, the big question to me is.
Where can I buy some more skill at?
I’d like to pursue having to many playing skills.

I love gear and I love stuff, it is the way we have developed our psyche under extreme advertising influence. I went through a period of severe GAS, part of which was the feeling that I would play better with the right gear. Sure, you will
Learn better with decent gear and something inspiring, but there is no guitar out there that will make me a better player, that is in me.

I would summarize that a guitar is a tool to make music. A good tool helps, and different tools are better for different aspects, styles, emphasis or tones of music.

If all I know how to do is a hammer a nail, a nice hammer is cool, a good hammer is required if I am serious about hammering nails. But I don’t need a screwdriver until I want to and am ready to turn screws and I sure don’t need a planer, table saw, lathe, drill press and that 100 piece clamp set until I have enough experience to start getting down and dirty.

Aside from this, guitars are often pieces of art. If that inspires, that is great as well. But it does bother me that a wealthy guy I know who dabbles in guitar has 60 or so guitars that are stored in various locations like under the bed in the guest room. What is the point of that? Poor guitars…

Great chatting here. Thanks for sharing.

I would like to share here I am playing almost 2 years and I still keep my first 70$ guitar. It is decoration on wall and I can remember that guitar was okay for beginner weeks, but then I wanted something better… more expensive.
Few days ago I picked the guitar up from wall… still in tune and believe me or not. It plays better than when I started to learn… but only because I got more experiences now.
So I agree guitar is a tool via you can expres yourself and if you dont have really bad quality guitar with 5cm action… it does not matter.

My lawyer forbade me to react on this kind of posts :stuck_out_tongue:

I own guitars in all price ranges and some are pristine, other are projects…
In all those years I’ve bought and sold a lot of gear but only 2 guitars, of which 1 I regret. (a cheap but modded tele copy)

I have an expensive custom ferrari red Flying V in production
I have a cheap white Harley Benton EX-84 LH on route as we speak

I saved up for them, I worked for them, I pay hobbies with what I can earn from hobbies.
This guy in a store aint got nothing on me! foggedaboudid

Thank you everyone for posting here, I read your replies with a great interest. There’s one thing I must emphasize though, the video I linked in no way reflects my personal views on the subject. I liked the statement ā€œbe happy with what you haveā€, but ā€œwhat you haveā€ is a matter of a strictly personal preference. I don’t think there’s anything like a ā€˜good’ or ā€˜bad’ attitude.

His videos are really good, i have been watching him for a while. Good insight from a small brick and morter type store guy.

Yes! That happened to me yesterday. I took my Squire Bullet off the wall and tuned it; it was so out of tune I thought I might snap a few strings! And boy, did it sound better than it ever did before! That was my Grade 1 guitar. Got my PRS since then and an acoustic, and now I wonder, perhaps I need a new guitar for Grade 3?

Oooooooh! That looks like something jazzy!

MIght i suggest a ā€œguitar safariā€, from time to time? "There can never be enough guitars… " whoever said there are too many guitars, needs to see this…

I used to buy reasonably expensive guitars until GAS struck hard, now I have inexpensive guitars but a fair few
I like diversity of sounds, all of my guitars sound different, not immediately noticeable, it’s more subtle but the subtleties is what gives them their own character. I also have a few rescued Junkshop finds that are a joy to play, because I saved them and spent time making them as good as they could be without spending too much. Two of them were too far gone to be playable but my Daughter has them for wall decor.
I just like guitars, basses and ukuleles, if there’s room………
