Ups To The All Down

The Musicopia Justin Guitar Android app has it’s limitations.
You are right. It provides a simplified strumming pattern as opposed the the more complex pattern that Justin discusses in his Wonderwall video. Honestly, someone who is just learning Wonderwall should probably focus on the chords and chord changes until they are down pat - then, work on the more complex strumming pattern.
Baby steps…

I’m just starting practice for Grade 2, Module 9, 16th note strumming patterns. At this point should I be trying to tap my foot on each beat while practicing the three different 16th note strumming patterns, or should I just be concentrating on keeping my strumming hand moving uniformly? I find trying to keep 4 beats to the bar with my foot messes with my strumming pattern, but I don’t want to create a bad habit of not keeping the beat with my foot (i.e. practice makes permanent)

IMHO, it’s more important to get your strumming hand (and wrist) moving uniformly to a metronome. Adding in the foot tapping on the 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 while the hand & wrist are moving to 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a is a secondary, but important goal for the long term.

I’ve been learning for ~4.5 years now, and I still find it difficult to tap my foot while simultaneously working on a new skill. Once I have the skill under my fingers a bit, it’s easier to add in the foot-tapping. The brain can only focus on one thing at a time.

YMMV

I very much appreciate the input!

Hello! I have a question about accents. “Officially” on the 4/4 all four down strums or 8 down and up strums we accent the first beat. On 3/4 we accent the first beat as well (as Richard explained). Now in the 16th Justin says to accent the second and four beats? Examples:

So, on 4/4 we have:

1 2 3 4 (4th)
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + (8th)
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a (16th)

And on 3/4 we have:

1 2 3

Is that correct?

In the beginning I would say that’s a good place to start and get good at before moving on.
I’d also add 6/8 time. Accent on the 1 and 4.
Most popular music will fall under these rules.

But depending on the music you can accent any strum for example Reggae the accent is on the &. Punk everything is accented giving you that driving beat.

Accenting the 2 and 4 is not limited to 16th note strumming. It is commonly known as the back beat and works in 4/4 time.

Thank you for explaining :+1:
But what “driving beat” means?
