Vintage Club #20 with Richard | Let's Create A Holiday Song Together

Hello Community

:guitar: Join Richard as we go off-piste in this special Vintage Club session.

It will run from 7pm UTC on Monday December 2nd - Reserve your spot here!

In Vintage Club #19 (check the archive for a recording plus downloadable resources here) we looked at some of the many ways that multiple guitars can play together - with mention that the techniques can be used in adding layers and textures to songs.

Here we put that into practice - by aiming to compose and build the parts of a ‘holiday song’ for the festive season in real-time with input from the audience.

Your ideas and suggestions - taken from live chat - will inform the composition. We will arrive at decisions for chord progressions, tempo, and other elements that will go to composing a song - hopefully in two or more parts (time dependent) of intro / verse / chorus / bridge/ outro etc.

This is definitely a step into the unknown and has all the potential to be a risky venture as Richard will be creating, playing, recording and over-dubbing multiple parts on a looper (a Digitech Trio+ that can also add bass and drums) in front of a live audience! It may go pear-shaped. However … If we have fun, learn a little more about music and songs and playing guitar then we all come out as winners. :sunglasses: A number 1 festive song is perhaps a dream too far … but …

If you miss the session the recording will be available in the Clubs Archive along with any additional resources. Clubs Archive.

Sounds like a Joycian ‘Here Comes Everybody’ from Finnegan’s Wake :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
I’ll await the outcome with anticipation (and possibly steal any ‘good bits’ for future projects )

I don’t know if that’s good or bad or other as I haven’t read Joyce … I know, for shame!

I prefer listening to Joyce than reading him
Lend your lugs to the inimitable Ronnie Drew singing The Ballad of Persse O’Reilly (or Humpty Dumpty)

Hey!

Gordon has already raised the question of potenial problems re: sharing royalties.
Now you want to add to that by forcing us to seek legal recourse against the scourge of a plagiarist?
Gadzooks.
You bounder.

Hi Richard, I know you’ll be using a looper type device and have a question about them which you may answer here or in the class tomorrow. I don’t have one of these devices and have minimal knowledge of what they are capable of. I know you can record your own background rhythm chords, play them back whilst you play your lead over top. However, let’s say I want to record myself playing along a well known recorded song. For example, “Jumping Jack Flash”, I need the drums and bass background of that song only, which will allow me to play along with the rhythm and/or lead guitar and record myself. How may I do this, what type of device do I need?

@magnanelli Alfio - the pedal I will use is a very specific one - a Digitech Trio+. Some would describe it as a ‘band in a box’ type of pedal.

You play a basic chord progression to ‘teach the band’ what the song is. The pedal learns the progression and, based on some use-selectable settings, will start to playback a bass and drum part to match. If you don’t like the part, you can change some of those settings until it suits. Then you can record a guitar loop over the top. And you can keep on recording multiple guitar loops after that. Guitar loops can be rhythm or lead or whatever.
I have no experience with her band-in-a-box type pedals to tell you of. If you are interested in going down that route, you can check in the gear - accessories sub-section. There’s this discussion and others too.

Are you joining us for our holiday special Vintage Club? Join us here - we’re live in about 40 minutes

I read through the live chat comments today - thanks again to all who joined in and got into the spirit of the event.

I did notice something I did not during the pressure of the live event, and due to the passing speed of suggestions at times.
Naughty Wolfgang copy / pasted his suggested chord progression multiple times.
He certainly gave himself a high chance of being selected eh!
Gotta be in it to win it taken to the max.
Haha
:astonished:

Well Richard, I hope you take his dubious methods into account when the royalties start to roll in.

A post was split to a new topic: Is possible to get the backing track of a song & remove guitar then put in a looper?
