What 3 pieces of advice would you give to future BLIM classes?

Don’t be afraid to go back to the start! You have the course for life.

Don’t stress if you fall behind. As others have said, you can return to the material again and again. And if you’re still closer to beginner than intermediate (like me), make it a marathon not a sprint.

Also, pick your priorities. I have a weekly private teacher and thought I would get super-charged instruction by doing this course . This backfired for me. The BLIM videos and practice – together with the demands of life – made it hard to make meaningful progress on private lesson songs. I tried to align things and asked my teacher for BLIM-relevant songs, but this didn’t really work either because he is not synched to the course. So I’m taking the BLIM course at a more leisurely pace, which is a bit of a shame because there’s value in keeping up and taking part in the challenges etc. Instead,I’d recommend that if you also have a private guitar teacher, give him/her details about your BLIM practice, and consider less frequent private lessons.

I agree with what you are saying about private lessons. I started using my weekly lesson as an extension of BLIM. It helps that my instructor is a professional blues guitarist.

@Richard_close2u, glad you’re making this thread public. I think a lot of future BLIMmers want some of this good information before they sign up. It’s good to have a clear idea of what to expect so you know if you have time and true desire to take the course.

10 posts were split to a new topic: What does this mean? When someone says licks fit with I, IV or V chords?

Hello to all new Blim 2 students, I would just like to pass one little bit of advice on to you, One of the most important things I regret not doing when I started Blim 1, Was not recording myself at the start of the course, when we finished and it was suggested we compare before and after I was gutted,

I know how you are feeling it’s the last thing you want to do but just pick up your phone and record yourself doing your first exercise on pattern one, and keep it, until this course ends,

I guarantee you will be glad you did it, I still regret my ignorance because I can’t get it back.

Cheers Hec Blim 1 back for the ride again and yeah I have recorded :guitar:

Thank you for the tip, Hec,
I’ll record myself when I start practicing! Only watched the videos yet and listened to songs and did some stupid stuff

Thanks Hec. I recorded myself saying I didn’t have anything to record because I’m new to electric, lead, and all things blues. But I like your suggestion and I will record as soon as I have something-- even something bad-- to record. Thank you!

I have a similar issue but I still managed to learn a few licks and they go with what my teacher is teaching so that’s a win.

Hi Lin,
For what it’s worth I told my teacher I’d like to suspend my private (face-to-face) lessons for 6 months to allow me to focus on BLIM 3. He was 100% supportive of this. I feel this was the right decision for me because it allows me to focus more intensively on the course. It seems to be paying off. I’ll see at the end of the 6 months whether I want to return to the lessons.

@DeltaTyne

Hi Hec, I missed this one somehow  Thanks for your support. I struggled a bit through Unit 1 (still working on getting the licks and songs up to speed - most around 80% now). Unit 2 is less of a struggle partly because “native” pattern 2 fits more comfortably under my hand! Haven’t got to the songs yet but I imagine challenges await. I like challenges.

Here’s a quote I like:
“I am always doing what I can’t do yet in order to learn how to do it” Van Gogh (verified).

Some people attribute it to Picasso. Off topic, but in my opinion, Picasso “un-learned”. He could draw extremely well then seeming lost the plot entirely!!!

I would adivse…

  1. not comparing yourself to anyone else - it’s your journey to be done in your time.
  2. play something on your guitar everyday - just pick it up and have a go, take one lick or scale from the module and play it to death, make it your own. Small chunks.
  3. don’t try to do too much! There’s a load of info in the course, it will last you a lifetime, so keep up with the videos and lives but heed no 2 and no 1 above.
