I saw AC/DC last night near Bratislava in Slovakia. They put on a good show although only Brian Johnson and Angus Young were present from the classic lineup. The volume was quite loud and I still have a bit of ringing in my left ear. I hope it will be gone by tomorrow.
First: Quiet Riot / Night Ranger
Last: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Next: Beatles Rooftop Concert cover band
I saw Yachtley Crew a couple of weeks ago. Iād never heard of āyacht rockā as a thing before. All the songs they played were incredibly overplayed soft rock radio songs, but besides that they were excellent musicians. They did have a saxophonist, which Iād never seen a saxophonist play live before, and he was really good and entertaining.
Before that I went to Godsmack and before that, Tool, both performances were this year. Tool was great, very polished. Godsmack was really good too but didnāt play many of their popular songs, which was disappointing.
Next up is Falling in Reverse, with support of Black Veil Brides and Jeris Johnson and Tech 9.
Steely Dan is often cited as the āflagshipā of yacht rock, but I think that label is just plain stupid. Iād call it jazz rock / jazz pop if anything.
There are pretty great concerts on this list.
For me:
First: Chris de Burgh
(or if you count things my parents took me to, a living room concert with Joe Glazer)
Most recent: Suzanne Vega
Next: Richard Thompson
Last concert: more like festival actually, as I was on Download. Lots of great bands, special kudos to Billy Talent, The Offspring, Hoobastank, Fall Out Boys, Wheatus, Tom Morello, Corey Taylor and very peculiar bands like Baby Metal and Heilung. Last one was the bomb!
Next: Jimmy Eat the World in London
First: Dire Straits, Melbourne, 1986
Last: Metallica, Melbourne, 2010.
Next: Pearl Jam, Melbourne, November.
First: Silverchair 1996
Last: Blink182 2024
Next: Greenday 2025
First: Beatles (Detroit, 1966 - perhaps needless to say, I was a kid)
Last: Billy Bragg (Last night!)
Next: Peter Hook and The Light (Thursday!)
Upcoming October: Bonnie Raitt
After a drought, itās turning out to be a great music month.
Last: Yesterday and the day before I attended the screenings of Koyaanisqatsi and Naqoyqatsi at MűvĆ©szetek PalotĆ”ja (Palace of Arts) in Budapest, with the soundtrack played live by the Philip Glass Ensemble themselves along with local Hungarian musicians. I like Glassā compositions and hearing them live was a great experience. The first film is quite an interesting one that can give plenty of food for thought. Iām much less certain about the second one, but the music was a huge plus and substantially different from the first one, mainly by the addition of percussion instruments.
Next: Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band tomorrow at the same venue
First, Mahavishnu Orchestra sometime in the early 1970s at college, second was NY Dolls same time and place.
Last, Rolling Stones, a few weeks ago, Orlando, FL.
Next, none scheduled.
