What you're having for lunch/dinner all around the world?

Thanks a lot @Silvia80 for the restaurant tip near Cervinia. Always so many good places to try.
For the moment, I’m enjoying the fresh cooler air as much as the food. I’m missing my guitar though.

I went over the San Bernardo yesterday on my way from lausanne.

I thought I’d go for another round :innocent::grin: hoping to have more pictures from all around the world!

The awful heat never prevents me to switch the oven on and for dinner in a few hours I prepared an anchovies/potatoes pie.

Jason @Ontime such a pity you didn’t take a pic of that breakfast! I love to to get to know the different eating habits from the different countries!

INGREDIENTS:

  • fresh anchovies
  • sliced potatoes
  • couple of eggs
  • garlic to be removed
  • parsley
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • salt a.r.

Oh boy :joy: I scarfed it so fast, I did not even think to take a photo of that.

Anchovies, :slightly_smiling_face: I have some luck with them. I would try that for sure. I try everything once or three times :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

My dads wife used a lot of anchovies and anchovie paste in her food. She was 2nd generation Italian from Long Island New York and made a lot of meals that her own mother and grandmother brought with them from Italy. It was fantastic when made correctly. Unfortunately they do not do it well on the west coast. Yours look yummy in the potatoes. I do like picked herring, different region I think.

For my contribution here is a photo of some street tacos my wife picked up. They got a bit tilted.

Hi @Silvia80 !

No pics today but breakfast consisted of Hami melon (sort of a cantaloupe/honeydew hybrid) filled with banana slices & blueberries along with fresh baked bagels with a cream cheese schmear! Yummy! :face_savoring_food:

I’m wondering about the heat wave all our members in Europe are talking about… here in the Southwestern part of the U.S., we are very regularly experiencing temperatures of 90-105 degrees fahrenheit (32-40.5 celcius) pretty much daily from mid June through August… this isn’t a Global Warming thing either! It was blisteringly hot here when I was a child!
Arizona & the desert parts of Southeast California are even hotter! So, my question is this - is air conditioning uncommon where you live? I’m fairly certain that it’s extremely rare for New Mexicans or Arizonians to go without A/C… pretty much unheard of here!

No, aircon is not common over here. But then again, we don’t live in a desert climate like you have in Arizona - we normally don’t need it.

We used to get one or two heatwaves each summer, which means a couple of days over 30°C and one or two days something like 35°C. This week we’ve had several days of 37-38°C, with a lot less cooling at night than what we are used to (min 28°C - we’re used to below 20°C temps at night). Other parts of my country have reached (over) 40°C today - the third time in 3 days that the all time temperature record has been broken.

And another big difference is that this is not dry heat, humidity is quite a bit higher than usual - not super humid, but higher than normal at this time of the year. Which makes it feel even warmer than it actually is.

I work in a fairly new, ā€œnearly energy neutralā€ building. This week they had to turn down the cooling because they were getting condensation because of the relatively high humidity.

France has also been getting flash droughts, which we don’t know - at all.

But hey, by Monday all will be back to normal again

Edit: Another way to look at it, which might give you a better idea: I live at roughly the same latitude as Calgary. New Mexico and Arizona are on the same latitude as the north of Africa. Our climate is softer than Calgary’s, it’s something like Vancouver with a bit less rain - so very far from NM and Arizona.

Today I had steak and smoked fish tacos with guacamole and cabbage. Typical Mexican style meal in San Diego with rice and beans. One of my customers gives me a meal free here anytime I want. When I cook at home it’s usually Mexican, German, Italian or steaks.

Haha, I wondered the same! Looked delicious definitely!
With our 12 year old, it was time to have home made burgers today too, but - OH , I didn’t think of this thread and forgot to take a photo!

@SDKissFan Your Tacos look really nice too! And how does it come you cook german too? Is there german heritage in your family?

Thank you, Silvia!
Since I saw your thred I wanted to take a picture of our meal once, but each day… either forgot it or we just ate some quick thing I wouldn’t have dared to post
But these rolled pancakes with salmon… Yeras ago we made those exact onces too. The only thing is I’m not exactly sure if the herbs were marjoram or something else.
I would have loved to eat your self made Ravioli!
Italian food is wonderful and my favourite cake is italian too, it’s like a cheesecake with lemon. I think it was called ā€œtorta al limoneā€ Also I loved to make my own Panforte Margherita in winter.

Yes my family is from Esslingen near Stuttgart. My grandparents lived there their whole lives and I used to visit while I was stationed in Germany. I speak fluent German and cannot resist jaegerschnitzel mit spaetzle :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:. If it were my choice I’d be back there. Aber Alles klar u. Wunderbar in California.

The sign of a truly dedicated cook! I cannot bear to turn on the oven from June through August. This anchovy dish looks fantastic, I will try to make it myself – in September

(One question: are the fresh anchovies already filleted, or do you have to do that yourself? Is it difficult?)

During these hot times I tend to gravitate towards cold meals, especially for lunch – salade nicoise, insalata caprese, tuna salad, prosciutto crudo with a few tomatoes and a mozzarella ball on the side, some good bread.

Wow! I never tried and I wouldn’t know where to start from! I much love eating it though

Eh!? :open_mouth: Do you eat sharks?!

So do we…and the good quality of our cold cuts helps. Also good fresh bread is a blessing. I usually cook in the morning to have cold dinners, though not everyday… so for exsmple for next week I planned stuffed baked veggies (with chicken breast in the stuffing), an octopus salade with potatoes and olives, a courgettes/onion pie and a nicoise salade as well…lots of raw veggies as side dishes!

No, they’re not, we sometimes find the fileted sardins at the supermarket and they’re good too, though I prefer the anchovies which we buy mostly at the fishmonger’s.

Defileting them takes a bit of time but it’s not difficult: you remove the head first and you’ll see the interiors come along with it, you then follow the lenght with your thumb and it opens easily; at this point you delicately remove the fishbone and wash it under the water…once you’ve done a few you’ll be able to speed up the process.

Have you ever had the fish known in Italy as ā€œpalomboā€? Then you, too, have eaten shark!

Sorry to hear you’re not feeling great Rogier! :mending_heart:
I had noticed you hadn’t been as active recently.
But then I haven’t had a whole lot of time to be on here also.
Hope it improves soon. I know what you mean, I get grumpy in the head when I"m not with my guitar as much :sunflower:

Challenge accepted @Silvia80 You’ve inspired me to cook! :joy:
I’ve got some ingredients for a soba noodle stirfry which I will try to do this evening. I’ll let you know if it happens and maybe share a picture if it turns out alright :grimacing: :face_with_peeking_eye:
