Who's practicing their holiday repertoire?

Not sure if this category is the correct one for the topic, but any admins are of course free to swoosh it over to another location if a different one makes more sense.

Just curious — anyone practicing holiday songs yet? If so, what are you practicing, and where do you plan on playing it?

I’ve started a fake-book version of “The Holly and the Ivy” where I’m playing the melody and my partner is playing the chords, partly so we can both practice playing with others (I’m a bit out of ensemble shape…), but if we get good enough at it, we might record it or play it at a party. That’s the entirety of my active holiday guitar repertoire right now.

What about you? Maybe someone has past holiday song recordings to share?

And on theme, happy Halloween/Samhain/Beltane, etc., for whomever it may be relevant!

Hi Crystal
This year I want to learn In the Bleak Midwinter - fingerstyle. I should make a start on that today as it’s November already! Thanks for the reminder!
I also like to play Christmas songs on my uke.
I plan on playing them for my dogs as I’m yet to play in front of another human person.
The Holly and the Ivy is so pretty, one of my favourite Christmas songs!

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK, hence we don’t have a Holiday Season in quite the same way as on the other side of the Atlantic, just Christmas.

Regardless, from a musical perspective I suspect it is a similiar scenario. It’s considered bad luck by some to play carols before 1st Decemember. I”ve always been of the view that musicians on solo instruments should practise Christmas songs from early November. At some point in early December someone may ask you to sit at piano or hand you a guitar and expect you to be able to play Christmas songs. My wife thought it was weird when we were 1st married, but she got used to it. Anyway as it’s Nov 1st today, thanks for the reminder and I’ll play some Christmas songs (probably on the piano) today.:mx_claus:
