Willie from Knoxville, TN

I thought I’d introduce myself. I just got my guitar from Justin’s playin’ it forward. Thanks. I don’t know if I’m gonna do good with the guitar or not but I’ve always wanted to learn how to play. Now that I’ve got one i can start working on learning how to play. I ran across Justin’s site by accident when i googled learn how to play guitar quickly and easily. I’m glad i did. Thanks Justin…

Welcome Willie! It sounds like you have everything you need: a guitar, desire to learn, excellent (and affordable!) lessons through Justin, and this Community. Well, guitar requires patience too, so hopefully you have a reasonable supply of that. Don’t be shy - if you have any questions, or even just want to say hello, we’re always here!

Welcome to the forum Willie.

Welcome to the group, Willie. Just know that it doesn’t come quickly and easily for most people. Using Justin’s methods, you’ll be playing songs quite soon, but it’s still a never-ending process.

Always remember what the great Andres Segovia said: the guitar is the easiest instrument to play, and the hardest instrument to play well.

Hey Willie, welcome to the community. After dreaming about learning to play guitar for decades I finally did it over 10 years ago thanks to Justin. Several things that helped me get over the initial difficulty were.

  1. Practice 15 minutes a day, every day.
  2. At the start my fingers hurt too much to play for 15 minutes (steel strings do hurt) so I did 5 minutes 3 times a day
  3. I picked a simple song to learn first from Justin’s beginners song book, it had 3 chords A, E and D
  4. Justin’s One Minute Changes exercise made it possible for me to play those 3 chords for that first song.
  5. songs songs songs. Once I could play one song all the way through, that gave me the inspiration to keep going. Now some 12 years later I have over 50 songs in my repertoire that I can play.

My wife has often said she’s so glad I decided to learn the guitar, the people we’ve met and the places we’ve gone to thanks to becoming a musician have just been fantastic.

Welcome to the Community Willie. Great to hear from a recipient of one of Justin’s ‘playin’ it forward’ guitars.
Have patience, follow the course lessons and you’ll get there. Good luck.

Hello Willie & Welcome!!!

My advice to newbies (aside from the excellent advice above) is to get yourself a guitar stand or wall hanger so that your new six-stringed friend is always at hand to play when you only have a few minutes… I like to pick mine up & practice for the 5 minutes that it takes for the coffee to brew in the mornings!
Also, keep the journey FUN! If you’re having a good time you’re way more likely to keep playing & learning!
Good Luck!!!

Hello and very warm congratulation. Hope to see you around in the community.

Great to see someone benefiting from the pass forward scheme, it’s a great idea!
As regards learning to play my only advice is to not pressurise yourself, to enjoy what you’re learning and have fun with the path to learning to play. Those are the most important things to remember, oh one last thing - the deadly sin - always remember that practice makes perfect (regardless of whether you’re doing it right or wrong!); take your time to get it right, don’t practice it wrong, slow down as much as is needed to get it right, speed comes with accuracy and practice.

Welcome to the community Willie, and congratulations on the guitar! Make sure to enjoy the journey.

Welcome to the forum Willie and congrats on benefiting from Justin’s PiF scheme. Now you have no excuse not to learn and plenty of folk here to help you on your journey !
Enjoy the ride.

Welcome, Willie, how wonderful for you! Don’t worry about how good you may or may not be, just do your best and enjoy yourself. You’ve gotten lots of good advice here already. Just remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint, don’t be discouraged if you’re not doing as well as you hoped this early in your journey. :grinning:

Hi Willie, welcome to the community forum. As others have said - keep the guitar where you see it every day, practice every day that you can starting with the beginning lessons, learn beginner song and above all have fun.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
