I’m understanding more and more about maintainance but I’m not able to check all the things you mentioned. I’m very lucky there’s a Luthier only a few km from where I live and he’s a very kind person and always explains me things…he also gave me one of his tools for removing the pins!
They actually have the shape of spaghetti …Italians’ priorities
Robert, I don’t have a “good recipe”, but a good criteria which I’m sure you might know as well: a few genuine ingredients is what make a dish a good dish. Like pasta for example, if you put only some olive oil and parmigiano you don’t need much more.
Very nice thread! Email Problems, string life & refreshing strings through boiling, culinary talk etc.
Didn’t get any mail in reply either.
I wonder if they would fix it or if I’d try another mail address instead.
I’m also not a keen string changer. I mean, whenever I think I would like to check different strings (for a different gauge of sound or feel to them) I’m glad to change them, but I didn’t really hear any degradation yet to be honest. Probably mostly it’s slow and your ears rather remember yesterday’s guitar sound than the one a few months ago when the strings were new.
And playing a little differently already can change so much in the sound, certainly more than old vs. fresh strings.
So I didn’t see a benefit in changing strings often, but every one needs to find it out for themselves. 12 years is definitely rather on the long side!
While mostly true for electric guitar, don’t underestimate how drastically strings affect the sound of an acoustic. You’re absolutely spot on that we get really used to the tone as it changes very gradually day by day, but when you put a fresh new set, the difference is night and day. Old strings make the guitar sound much duller. Which may be what you want, but that’s another thing.
I never experienced a big difference in sound, but then, I only changed acoustic strings a few times and you did often (and certainly lately even more!) so you got way more experience!
PS. To be honest … I thought about it and I changed quite a few strings on ukes and classical guitar and electrics, but on my two acoustics I only changed strings once! They’re both not that old yet, but I hear you telling me to do it soon and ok - I will!
Cheers Robert! My first AVOYP posted a while back has me playing my 12-string. Hopefully, in the near future I will record another one with it (and fresh strings? ), but currently suffering from laryngitis once again. Will take some time…
Will check out your latest video the next days.
Call me crazy, but this sounds quite delicious. But definitely we need parmigiano!
I was thinking the same, though it would be nice to have an official statement about this. But on the other hand, the team is always super busy, so let’s see. I think we are all good here (except for to old strings here and there… ).
Yeah but when you played the strings for years on end, changing it may have unintended effect and you kinda have to play your guitar differently since it might sounds different than usual.
But nevertheless, don’t forget you own me a string change old buddy!
Maybe I’ll drop by the store soon,so see you then! @metramaks
I also didn’t receive a confirmation email when I entered my usual email address. I thought I’d test Lisa and Silvia’s theory and I entered again with a different email address: this time, I did receive the confirmation email.
As far as I can tell, the confirmation email is only for you to confirm that you want to be subscribed to Justin’s mailing list (as per GDPR and good old-fashioned netiquette). If you’re already subscribed, you’ve already confirmed your interest so you don’t need to re-confirm.
I have to agree on this, it took me years to realise though and if it weren’t for Justin mentioning dead strings in one of his lessons I probably would be still unaware of it…but once he brought my attention to this aspect I was like Ah !! Now anytime I change the strings on my Acoustic Guitar I so love the sound of it! I changed the strings a couple of weeks ago and my colleague who knows nothing about guitars was like “wow!”
You can add anything you like actually (what about some chili peppers to go with the garlic too?) …but what really matters is
I prefer a bit younger cheese, like grana padano (but better quite a lot of it )
Actually, we’ll have some pre made filled pasta from “Rana” this evening (I hope you’d rate it ok ) which we sometimes have when we want something quick and easy, but still tasty.
Sorry for the confusion! Your assumptions are correct, if you’re already subscribed to the JustinGuitar newsletter, you won’t receive another confirmation email.
Only new newsletter subscribers receive a confirmation email, similar to our course waiting lists. We’ll try to make that more clear moving forward.
