Episode description
I explore the truth behind the famous 10,000-hour rule, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell. Today, Prof Alex Edmans uncovers why the rule persists despite its flaws and dives into the psychological biases that make misinformation so believable.
You’ll learn:
Why the 10,000-hour rule isn’t as universal as it seems (feat. insights from Alex Edmans).
How confirmation bias shapes beliefs—from the Atkins diet to Deepwater Horizon.
The dangers of narrative fallacy in explaining success (feat. 1975 Barry Staw study).
Real-world examples of misinformation, from Belle Gibson’s cancer cure claims to Volkswagen’s diesel scandal.
A simple mental trick to fight confirmation bias and save yourself from misleading ideas.
Well, how many hours than would be needed to, let’s say, play effortlessly the style of choice. Or, even though it’s not my goal, to be able to perform on stage? What I aim is to be able to play usual pop songs or those that aren’t really complex with ease. So I’d like to see chords of song, and be able to instantly play through the song without fumbling, even if I need to look at sheet. I’m now 600+ hours of guitar hands-on practice (using Justin’s practice assistant, so it logs hours), which is 4+ years since I started my journey. Yet, I still can’t play effortlessly simple songs. Some really simple ones, no barre chords I can nail without issue if it doesn’t have complex rhythm, but even after 3+ years of practicing “Behind Blue Eyes” every single session I still mess up some chords and it’s still bit “jerky”. So if not 10000 hours, how much, I wonder? Probably 10000 hours were chosen, as it is insane amount of time, so you’re practically guaranteed to be very good at the thing you practice 10000. As I wrote, I don’t know if I’ll ever reach in my lifetime (1 hour a day w/o weekends/holidays) such number. If I continue this regime, which is quite unlikely, I’d reach 10k hours at age of 72
