I resurrected my Yamaha FG-340 from the basement in 2008. Originally purchased in the 1970’s, I quickly realized that playing the guitar was not as easy as musicians make it look.
I decided to try again in 2008 and stumbled into a site called ‘Guitar Noise’ which featured a teacher by the name of David Hodge who would post written lessons with small embedded sound samples of what he was trying to convey. I made some modest progress and he pointed me to two teachers who helped stoke the fire. The first was Jamie Andreas with her Principles of Correct Practice for Guitar. She was instrumental in emphasizing left hand development. The second was Justin Guitar. I originally started at the beginning in his lesson plan, but never followed all the way through. My process has morphed into picking a song I love that Justin has posted a lesson on. When I run into something I can’t handle I then revert back to the specific lesson to master the technique.
I have tried several attempts at music theory, but I inevitably get lost.
Nevertheless, I have made significant progress through the years and can now play things that I love fairly proficiently. I have never played outside of my music room.
