Hi Justin, thanks for this awesome part of your course. Really enjoy playing those licks when jamming with my friends.
Could you please tell at what speed you recorded this one ? This would be really helpful to me to set a kind of goal I need to reach ^^
Currently I manage to play it at 220 bpm but you play so much faster xD
What’s the best way to get faster? Is it the old metronome trick, play over and over at one speed then dial up the metronome?
I can currently play this one at about 140bpm which is real slow compared to Justin and others above it seems. So in curious how one would go about speeding up from here.
Thanks all.
This is what I do, and is has repeatedly worked for me so far. Others may have different opinions.
Find out the exact, specific movement, or movements that are slowing you down and/ or causing errors and inaccuracies when you speed up.
There are many, many individual elements that go into performing a lick, even a simple one. Any one or more or these can be causing progress to suffer.
Hand position, pick grip, pick depth, pick angle, amount of movement, string crossing technique and movement, tension etc.
Film yourself, analyse it, and ascertain, to the best of your ability, the exact issue or issues Then correct that , and practice it, over and over, in various contexts.
Sounds like a bit of work; and it can be , initially. However, I’ve found it is a considerably more effective and time efficient approach, for any issue. Much more efficient than endlessly repeating poor technique a thousand times, in the hope of getting faster; and in the process, ingraining that poor technique.
Cheers, Shane
