1 Year Anniversary!/ Finally standing while playing!

I’m celebrating my 1 year anniversary of playing guitar today🥳! One goal I had starting out was to be able to play the best guitar solo ever IMO, the Ernie Isley “Voyage To Atlantis” solo! This is only the first of 3 solos in that song so I’ve got more work to do but proud of how far I’ve come with this solo and just my guitar journey in general. I’m having fun and to everyone thats been here the whole time- thanks for cheering me on☺️

This is a big deal for me. It’s taken me about a year but I’ve finally just stood up to play a song! I gotta say, the guitar got heavy pretty quick and I noticed I got short of breath like I was doing cardio after a few takes (and I work out)! I’m definitely impressed by anyone who does this regularly. I will probably be returning to my seated position playing my guitar😄

Well done. It gets easier with practice, and it comes with some advantages. It’s easier to sing (at least for me), it helps with posture/shoulder pain, and you can sway to the groove :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. Your guitar looks like a thinline Tele so it’s lighter than most electrics. Maybe a thicker/ergonomic shoulder strap would help.

You sure looked like you’ve been standing and holding that guitar forever.
Very good sense of rhythm. And what a beautiful voice!
Great job.

Yes I think you’re right about the strap and I think I need to incorporate it into my practice time so I can build my stamina for it too.

Nice performance Sonyal. Standing and playing is tough, I gave up trying.

Don’t completely give up, add it your daily practicing.

For sure. It opens the lungs giving more volume and air expansion, it also gives more diaphragmatic control. All this will lead to more power and overall vocal control.

You can always continue sitting when you practice and perform acoustic songs. I love that you are grooving while standing. I always find myself moving much more to the music. I can’t even help it. I really dig that too

Edit:
I see your next message now.

Haha great :+1:t2:

Very nice, you look very comfortable there. I’m going through the sit/stand transition currently. It occurred to me that Justin should recommend playing whilst standing (at least for a part of each practice) from very early on to get players used to doing so.

Hey Sonyal
Congratulations! I know, that would be a big deal for me too!
Looks like you’ve nailed it. You look so natural
I struggle with it, it feels so different, like my whole spatial awareness is off. I included standing practice in my practice routine plans for this year, so, you know… we’ll see

It’s a lovely song too with great groove

Great strumming and singing. You look very relaxed. Beautiful guitar!! Perfect for standing up. You will get used to it.

Sounds great, Sonyal. You look totally relaxed and into the song.

Like anything, may take a little practice to become fully comfortable. I’d encourage you to persist. You seem to have no difficulty in standing, playing and singing… nothing that suggests it was a struggle. Keep at it and you’ll develop the stamina. Maybe pick your lightest guitar to start with.

Nice one Sonya, looks like you’ve been doing it for years. Wish I could play like that standing up.

Excellent Sonyal. Standing really helped with the ‘groove’ on this one. Well done.

Thanks so much! It took me a year to get the nerve to do it. I like being able to have a good view of the strings and that’s not possible when your standing. That was my biggest detterant for not “just” standing up like Justin suggests early on. I would pick a song you know well and really like to play, and use that as your standing up practice song and try to play it every practice. That’s what I’m planing to do with this song, and see if I can gradually add more songs to my stand up repertoire. Best wishes with your journey!
