1st AVOYP - A Change Is Gonna Come plus Tennessee Whiskey

I need to get beyond using all down strokes, but I like it anyway.

I kind of messed up the initial intro slide, but not too bad. No tricky chords. My singing leaves something to be desired, but it’s an easy song to play.

Bravo on sharing your fits AVOYPs, Michael.

Enjoyed both, playing and singing. Good rhythm though maybe a tendency to speed up a little . . . maybe?

For future:

Note the category guidelines (Community Recordings: Rules & Etiquette. Important Notice - #3 by Richard_close2u) of one topic per month. I moved your second to the first. You can add as many as you like as replies.

Getting guitar-vocal balance is hard when recording with (I assume) a phone. I also think the guitar may have clipped a wee bit. So I suggest sit a little further back. Try raise the phone and position it ideally head-high and angled to frame your head and the entire guitar. That may help with the balance and any clipping plus a better view of your playing.

Keep on keeping on and I look forward to more.

@pasvorto Bravo on your first shared recordings Michael, two great songs to play and sing.
RE: all down strums … there’s nothing wrong with this approach whatsoever … though it means twice as much movement and effort for the strumming arm. There is also scope for stopping / starting if the rhythm has some small gaps, which it does here, and your arm noticeable stops moving in places rather than mainatining an always moving motion. Nevertheless , well done.
RE: Tennessee Whiskey
This is only a 2-chord song, stay on Am shape, don’t move it to a C-shape.
You have capo at fret 2 playing a G-shape chord - which makes it an A major chord in actuality. The Am shape is actually a Bm chord. The song is in the key of A. With no capo, those chords would be played using A major and Bm shapes.

The intro riff you play is a misfit because you are playing it as though there were no capo. But, because of the capo, you are playing that riff too high, matching the key of B instead of A. I presume you learned the riff from tab or an online source and they were presented for a guitar without a capo.
To match your capo position you need to make an adjustment to the riff. Like this:

Note - to suit your singing voice, try the capo at different frets. If you do, the tabs I have shared here work no matter where you place the capo if you use G-shape and Am-shape grips.

Well done, Michael, great to see you enjoying yourself thanks HEC

Thanks for all the feedback. Great comments and things to work on. Yes, I picked this up off a Youtube video.

My bad., I did not see the once a month rule. I will be more observant going forward. Yes, it was recorded off my phone. To go further back means the mic is not picking up as much. I need to invest in some ‘good’ recording gear.

I went back and read your “Introduce yourself” post. Nice to see that you are back here trying it out again. I enjoyed your two songs here. You got some great tips from David and Richard. I will be looking forward to hearing from you again and seeing great progress from you. You can do it!

No stress, Michael.

Recording on the phone can work pretty well, depending on the phone I guess. I suggest some experimenting with different positions. Even if you don’t drop back. And maybe that with a gain boost afterwards might work.

A lot also depends on what other gear you have, such as PC or laptop.

I just tried your arrangement using capo2 + hammer-ons instead of slides. Sounds good. Thanks.

Glad it helped.

Perhaps a pt.2 recording?

Congratulations on your first AVOYP Michael.
A great milestone my friend.

If you really like this song (Tennesee Whiskey), it plays much better under the fingers without the capo, especially the little riff. Have you tried it?

I assume you’re avoiding the Bm barre chord, which is perfectly fine at this stage; but give it a go if you havent yet.
All the best.

Cheers, Shane

The all downstrokes seemed to fit the song. Well done. Maybe that’s how you ‘felt’ the strum should be? You were really into it.

Different strums on this one. Again, it fit the song. You strum a lot. Hopefully your arm/hand/wrist were relaxed as much as possible. I was in a ukelele group live performance this past Saturday. It went 3.5 hours long, with one short break. I tend to fast strum on some songs, and by the end, my arm was about to fall off. Great job.

good effort Michael. You’ve performed 2 songs with great enjoyment, which is always nice to see. Keepum coming. Once a month!
