Its a pretty standard picking pattern Justin is using for this sort of lick.
However, if you find an alternative that works for you, use it. It can depend a lot on your picking style.
It can also depend on the context of the lick
ie, what comes before and after.
eg. There are some cases where you may want to start on an upstroke.
The upshot? No hard and fast rules here. As long as your technique and articulation are sound.

The tab notation looks like 8ths.
You can take it that the overall notation is set for shuffle time but that it doesn’t show that above each and every bar. Swing / shuffle 8ths, not straight would be the default in these licks.
Thanks. It seems like if I do hammer-on/flick-offs my hand stops moving. If I do keep the pick moving then I cant help but pick all notes (in this situation). I will try for a few weeks to see if I can nail it - my new challenge.
