I recently came across this obscure website that looks promising if you are into fingerstyle acoustic blues. It’s been put together by someone who decided to learn a new blues song every week for a year (except he couldn’t stop so it’s now up to 69). This is from the About page:
The song pages will have a brief introduction to the artist, and a brief run down on the history of the songs. There’ll be an audio file at the top of the page, just under the song title. A lot of the songs will be old, so the quality of the recordings might be a bit dodgy.
The tabs will be broken into sections -. the intro, the progression, then any solos, outros, bridges etc.
trying to learn a new song a week for me is a real stretch so I’m sure such a project will be a more occasional visit rather than diving in and doing it all as described.
That was me in my early days, now, depending on the song obviously, I can learn some songs in only a day or two so don’t discount how well you’ll progress.
it’s very variable for me. some songs I pick up in under an hour but others take a looooong time. Depends on exactly what it is I need to work on in order to get it.
But for this specifically I’m thinking about how long it took me to “get” the first lesson in the solo blues course (the first free one). because that’s going to be something like many of the songs in here. granted I’d be able to pick up stuff faster once I picked up others but I’m sure there are some real curveballs in there that will push my skills hard.
Just to clarify, the whole “learn one blues song a week for a year” idea was HIS personal project, not a suggestion for anybody else. I guess he put a lot of work into it and thought it worth sharing.
I just like having it all in one place - a recording, some background info about the artist and the song, the lyrics and (most importantly) the tabs.
simply choosing a new song every week is a lot of work. let alone putting together all the other resources (though I suppose much of the assembly of the resources could have come afterwards).
Yeah. I remember learning one song in my first year of playing and it took me a whole month to get it down. At that stage it seemed like building a repertoire would take forever. Now, 15 years later, I’m fascinated that some songs only take a handful of play-throughs now, and to be fair, there are dreamer songs that are taking me years.
Many thanks for this post, @telemann1. That web site is an amazing resource, and not a site I have come across before, despite how long it appears to have existed. So many great songs there with supporting tabs, written notes and recordings.
Yes! I had been looking around for a while for acoustic blues tutorials and only found this because someone mentioned it in an obscure reddit post. It’s certainly a hidden gem.
Wow, thank you for sharing this! I just quickly went through the site and selected a few songs at random. There’s some great songs on there I’ve never heard before and would be good to learn!
