That would only work if the two notes where on the same string. The two note are on different strings so it indicates a tie or slur meaning both note are to be play as smoothly as possible or let the first note ring into the second note.
Duh. Thanks for saving me (and @Whiplash41594) from myself! Now I’ll really remember what this means.
Thanks a million
I believe it’s the notation for what’s called Legato. As stated above, for playing the notes smoothly.
When you play a chord that is just 3 strings in the middle. Like 022000 or 000230 do you strum only the 3, and if so the up strum on 3 strings
seems tough. Unless I use a thin pick. If that indeed is the required skill, whats a good exercise? Thanks!
your chord is all strings. use an x for not strummed/muted.
Not sure where you are in the class content. The muting of strings is often used for strumming past your intended strings. Personally, I don’t think more flexible picks are going to do much. Have you seen the string muting classes yet?
I havent gotten to that section. Ill take a look. Thanks.
grade 2 module 8:
I’m no expert and you may know this but try hitting your lowest root note (on string 4-5-6) on your downstrokes and then treble upstrum (strings 1-2-3). If you are looking to do small 3 string chords up the neck, these muting recommendations are spot on.
Like the hilighted passage here, would you just strum the 3 notes in the chords? Would playing this at speed require muting etc to be played properly? Alternate strumming them is tricky too. Learning lol, thanks in advance.
Assuming the passage is strummed, then absolutely - muting is needed. It would be possible to play those power chords as blocks with hybrid or fingerpicking and no muting but from what you are saying the piece needs strumming.
Check grade 2 module 12 for power chords. In essence, you should aim to develop ability to strum only 2 / 3 strings with power chords, but you should also be able to mute all other 4 / 3 strings with your index finger.
“The offspring - Pretty fly” is a great song to practice strumming accuracy and overall power chords.
“Lenny Kravitz - Fly away” is a great song to practice effective muting as you have constant up/down strums and it is very difficult to hit only 3 strings.
That will undoubtedly be all down strum power chord playing. https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/all-down-8th-note-strumming-b2-805
