A few questions on chord notation, tab and notes

A f major barre is no problem. But theres a chord requiring an open high e and the rest standard f barre. Fretting the b and not the high e is nigh impossible. 2 fingers instead of barre is kinda do able if you barre your pinky on the 3rd fret. Or wrap your thumb to fret the low E which I hate to do because it seems awkward. Help please? Oh I’d mute it but it specifies open.

Welcome to the forum Scott
The chord you’re looking for is an FMaj7 and you don’t need to play the F on the thick E string or you can play it with your thumb.
The easiest way to play it is xx3210 or x33210.

Your chord should be writen thickest to thinnest 133210

Nope the chord is written

As a open HIGH e.

Hi Scott and welcome to the community.

The chord tab has F7M above it.

That means F major 7.
It is more usual to write Fmaj7.

Note that F7 is not the same at all.

@stitch is referring to that chord and is advising that you can play i perfectly well as a four or a five string chord. The lowest note F on the 6th string is an optional extra.

Five string version - placing the note C in the bass so technically called F major 7 / C or Fmaj7/C

Four string version - a mini-version of Fmaj7. F is the lowest note so this is not a slash chord.

So im not losing my mind roflmao cause a b fretted but open e seemed way hard. So am I correct in thinking I can play this and just play as a normal f major barre with or without the low E? Do you tjink they intended what I thought or a mistake in the tab? Its not official. Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be aboard. Awesome fast answer btw!

Fmaj7 has a distinctive and different sound to F major.
Subtle but noticeable.
Sometimes a swap of one for the other can be fine. Use your ears to decide. If it sounds good it is good.

That’s an Am/G. The second chord in Led Zep’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” which is on my LL

Fmaj7 does not have a G in the bass but does have the open top E and an F on the 4th D string

Cool but no matter the high e is played right?

Peter is correct and Richard and I explained to you how to play a FMaj7 chord in you other post.

I understand. Is there any chord that requires a barred b and a but not high e? Such placement seems impossible so if it exists time to get busy at it.

So youre saying that 0 stands for the low E. Does the 3 stand for a low E in the next chord? Confusing. I know you said how to do it, so just disregard the numbers and play it as a Fmaj7?

I dont mean to come off dense lol. If the tabs are just written wrong thats super. Id love to ignore the numbers and just play the chord written in at the top. But my little ocd brain says nope. They say ringing high e right there 0. Roflmao.

Also notice everyone I see playing it uses a capo. That may change things some, unsure.

If Fmaj7 is the chord needed, yes, play the open 1st string.

Try this lesson.

Whatever tab site and chord software you are using seems unreliable.
Try Justin’s chord library too.

Yeah Ive had justins software and such forever. Love him. Had trouble with chord perfect registering and it became frustrating. I still like the lessons and his videos. But went other places to continue various things. I practice every waking hour. If Im up, I have a guitar in my hands. Avg 5 hours a day since january. I look at tabs and such constantly. Very eager. Practiced barre relentlessly. Glad to be in here. I do value justin greatly. He helped make it even more fun at the start. Thanks.

Wow, you must sleep a lot!

(Just kidding :grinning: that’s a lot of guitar playing.)

The hilighted section, the curved line coming off the note. Thanks everyone.

Hi, as I understand it, the curved line from 5 to 3, and 4 to 3, indicates a pull off. If it were the other way around, that is 3 to 5 and 3 to 4, it would be a hammer on. Thanks for asking…I had to confirm before I wrote this. Hopefully it’s now committed firmly in my mind!
