So this is a small performance we did with our school band, in the auditorium of the school.
The recording is made with a phone, so the quality is what it is.
We did 3 songs, Breezeblocks (Alt-J), a medley of Nothing really ends (Deus) and Niks kan echt veurbij goan (it’s in Flemish, and means broadly the same, but in an Antwerp accent), and Disparate Youth. (Santigold).
I’m the one (barely visible) with the guitar on the right, but you can hear me clearly.
I fumbled twice or so, but overall it went pretty good.
@Willsie Thank you.
This was the second time i was on that stage. First time, i played for the very first time, alone. (With a piano for rythm). And that couldn’t have gone worse.
The soundcheck was plugging in the guitar, and somebody asking me: “is this loud enough?”.
Me thinking: “how should i know?”
Nerves all over, shaking, sweaty hands and a song that wasn’t really performed but rather struggled through.
After that experience, i said to myself: “Never again, not that way.”
So this time, i told my teacher and the other members that i wasn’t going on to that stage again without a) a decent soundcheck, b) i’d turn the amp up to eleven and c) i’d like my favorite amp on stage too. (Line6 spider, which i really started to like during practice and feel comfortable with).
So now there was time enough to check, set up the amp to a decent level, so i could be heard, and i had some time to warm up.
And it went much, much better.
Great and so much more fun for you allready now… and just shows ( what you wrote) what you learned from the first time…
are you already looking forward to a 3rd time? yes I’m sure … and it is because this t is of course becoming more and more fun
And getting up and doing it is the only way to go.
Sure, there’ll be disasters at times, but you get much better at avoiding/dealing with them.
Love to see someone else pay homage to dEUS although I wouldn’t really describe it as a ‘medley’. The syncopation and horns lent it a ‘Waitsian’ feeling
I had great fun covering this with our family band
That was rather because we had (and this is probably due to the vantage point of the person filming, so it doesn’t look that way) limited space on the stage.
There was this grand piano which took up a rather hefty amount of space, and then there was us.
So i had to wiggle around a bit and find somewhere to set up the amp and pedalboard.
Our bass player had to stand behind me.
I don’t know if that piano has wheels…
And thank you for your encouraging words. Again, that means a lot to me.
Twice in 3 songs is good going. I think I’ve played live approximately 700 times. I’d have been very happy with only a couple of mistakes in everyone of those😀. Most times, I suspect it’s only been me that has noticed them. One of the great things about playing in a band is that the likely hood of you all messing up at the same time is very small. Feeling good about the band’s overall performance is way more important than counting your own errors.
Well done to you and your band. Takes a lot of nerve to get up on stage and perform and it’s great that you used the experience you gained from your first stage appearance.
Yes I agree, get a better camera man next time.
