Has anyone had a guitar “pleked”. The local shop wants $300 for a ek and complete set up. Probably more than the guitar is worth but I’m attached to it:).

Hi Roch ,

You will probably find your answer here, if not, ask someone there a question because I don’t know much about it myself. …I hope this helps :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Greetings

Hey Roch,

Its worth every cent, assuming your inexpensive guitar is a quality instrument, and is a good candidate for pleking.

($300 US is pretty pricey though.
I paid $400AUS, including a new high quality bone nut. Maybe shop around if possible).

One caveat though.

These extraordinary machines enable precision beyond any human beings capability. I’ve seen them in action quite a few times now.
The quality of end result though will be determined by the skill and experience of the luthier doing the job. Make sure you are very confident in his/ her ability, as you’re outlaying a few hundred bucks basically based on this.

When pleking a guitar, you really should replace the nut, to ensure absolute uniform precision across the whole guitar ( unless its brand new and faultless of course). Wonder if he mentioned this?

As my originaI post noted, I had my $500AUS LP clone pleked about 18 months ago by Rob, my local luthier.

I knew it was a quality instrument, and was/am very fond of it. I had the confidence in Rob when he confirmed it was indeed a good candidate for Pleking. He simply will not plek crap/ faulty/ bowed guitars. He’s not into wasting people’s money.

When I received mine back, I was stunned; and the better guitar player I’ve become, the better I’ve been able to appreciate the transformation.

All the best.

Cheers, Shane

Shane, you should know by now I always take your comments to heart. Thanks

I have a Squier telecaster which despite the fact that I have quite a few more expensive guitars this is the one that I started my journey on and I have spent the most time playing. It’s good quality, I have upgraded the bridge and installed a Bigsby on it and so it probably needs a professional set up.

As Joe Banomassa says about his guiitars he doesn’t feel like he owns them he’s just the custodian until they get passed down to the next person. That’s how I feel about my guitars. I want them maintained to the best possible condition.

Since I am emotionally attached to this particular piece I’ll probably take it to the spa and have it pleked. :joy: Duly noted about the nut and I’ll shop around for a better price. This store has a good reputation and my friend Andy Timmons takes his guitars there so I trust them.

Cheers!

Trust is a big factor. Go with it.
Looking forward to hearing about your reaction when you get it back.

Shane, you’re not by any chance in the Perth area are you?

No mate. I’m literally on the opposite side of the country, about 4000km from Perth; 1km from the beach sand, on the East Coast of NSW…:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Been there, spent a couple weeks with an old rocker from Perth last summer, thought you might know him. Cheers He taught me some good stuff on the guitar!

I actually lived in Perth for a year, in 2010. Beautiful, well-planned city, and nice beaches.
