Thanks guys. Glad you liked the song and I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.
Thanks for listening Sylvia. I’d been practising the song prior to going on holiday, getting the chord progression down and working out the riff. Whilst on holiday I listened to the song a lot to get the lyrics and phrasing memorised.

Thanks so much for the supportive comments, always much appreciated. Yes the smile at the end is as much one of relief as anything else that I’ve got through it without any major fluffs!
Thanks for listening and commenting Brian. Hopefully I’ll not be stereotyped by my one takes. Anyway, as you can see if you read the other comments, I’m following in your footsteps by performing a song no one else has heard of! In fact -
Thanks Phil. Yes it’s a one take. My system is to learn a song until I’m comfortable with it, then if I can play it 2 or 3 times in a row without a major mistake then I’ll go for it and press the record button. Inevitably there will be something that I’m not totally happy with but if it’s a poor chord this time it would be a wrong lyric the next time or a missed riff note the next time. So I go for the first take. If I tried to get it ‘perfect’ I’d never post anything.
Well that is another artist and song that has passed me by but heck that was one great toon !
Can see why you want to cover it Gordon. Suited your vocals to a T and that was certainly well played. Had to go hunting for the post as it had dropped off my radar, well worth the effort tracking it down. Single Take Saturday works for me.
@oldhead49
Thanks Dave. Glad you enjoyed the tune and if you and Brian think class act, well, my work is done. @CD02
Thanks Craig. Yes I enjoyed putting the strumming, picking and bass line together. It adds so much more dynamic to a song than just plain strumming.
@roger_holland
Thanks for the listen Rogier. Glad I got your morning off to a good start. @LBro
Thanks LB. It’s a long way short of a West Coast Media production but your support means a lot.
@TheMadman_tobyjenner
Thanks for the listen, support and encouragement Toby. Much appreciated.
Glad you found it Toby. Yes, the day after things get posted here they disappear under the avalanche of posts that the site gets. @Bytron08
Thanks Byron. If you read the other replies you’ll see you’re not the only one who’s not heard of the artist or the song!
I enjoyed that so much. So much so, that I went to subscribe to your YouTube channel only to discover you haven’t put up any content. Yet, one presumes!
I’ll check back, soon. No pressure… : )
On a serious note, I know I sit on the the more “critical” side of this community when it comes assessing playing with emotions/believing the delivery, but I have to admit, your recordings always make me stop and think. Is it life experience (not necessary related to age) or character or is it just a perfect song selection or natural talent.
There’s quite a few people on this community I would enjoy playing with or hearing live, but Gordon you always make me put your one take Wednesdays (and Saturdays now I guess) on repeat for at least 5-10 plays.
I like to keep a lower profile Wayne!Thanks for the listen and I’m pleased you enjoyed my version of the song. @Boris1565
Thanks for taking time to listen and comment Boris. Much appreciated.
Hi Luka, really good to hear from you. Thanks so much for taking time to listen and write such supportive comments.
Your thoughts on the delivery of the song are interesting. I was on holiday prior to posting this AVoYP (without guitar), and listened to the song a lot whilst learning the lyric. Perhaps because I had time on my hands I analysed the lyric more than I normally would and created an idea in my mind as to the meaning. This in turn perhaps helped me ‘feel’ the song more.
Although I have to confess that the line “Pasadena in the rain, eatin’ doughnuts and readin’ Twain” has me mystified.
Nice one!!! I stumbled across this post while looking for something else & really enjoyed the listen… I think I’ve finally identified who your playing style reminds me of… Arlo Guthrie! I had just watched a video of him playing St. James Infirmary yesterday & it was still fresh in my mind… I’m a bit of an Arlo fan so I definitely mean this as a compliment! Thanks for posting another fun tune!
BTW - This comment made me laugh…
My family was visiting California on vacation years ago (pre-GPS) & got lost… it was late… we’d been driving for about 800 miles that day… most places were closed when I left the highway in Pasadena, & I stopped at a 24 hour local doughnut shop to ask for directions. It wasn’t raining that night but the place had several people hanging out sipping coffee & nibbling doughnuts. We were hungry so I got a dozen doughnuts in addition to directions towards Disneyland… not sure if it was the hunger, the hour or the long trip, but those were the BEST doughnuts I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. Unfortunately, we didn’t remember the name of the shop & couldn’t find it again the next time we were in Cali…
I could definitely imagine sitting there, while it’s raining out & reading a novel - why not Mark Twain??? It could really happen!!!
