Adios to California - John Hiatt

Ok, so it’s not Wednesday, but guitar rules are made to be broken. :grinning:
I’ve liked John Hiatt for a long time so thought I’d have a go at Adios to California as it suits acoustic guitar.
The tricky bit in this one is the riff that’s repeated several times. I got them mostly right.
Comments welcome.

Happy to hear a ‘Single Take Saturday Song’ from you Gordon.

Great rhythm and feel, didn’t notice any hiccups on the riffs.

Most enjoyable listen

Oh my, Gordon, that was such a good listen. So much of your playing style and singing I admire. More please!

Clearly, often just one voice and one guitar are perfectly sufficient to make a song it’s sheer pleasure to listen to… I’m 71 now, I used to sing years ago (btw, my favourite song was “Sixteen Tons”), but now my voice has deteriorated considerably and has become a bit ‘rusty’ due to the age and the lack of daily practice. The more I’d like to congratulate you on your awesome performance.

Thanks Rick. Your listen and support means a lot.
@DavidP
Haha yes. It’s a single take Saturday!:grin: Thanks so much for your support. Pleased the less than perfect riffs went unnoticed. I enjoyed learning the riff, in the original album version it’s much more complex played with multiple guitars, slide etc.
@Willsie
Thanks John. I’m pleased you enjoyed my take on the song. It was a fun one to learn.

Hi Tomasz. Thanks for the listen and taking time to comment. Us old dogs have voices that have matured like fine wine. :smiley:. Yes I like the one guitar, one voice approach.

What a nice treat, Gordon! That was most enjoyable. :smiley:

Sometimes all it takes is a man, his guitar and that makes up for a great performance - as you have just proven. :slight_smile: Played and sung very well and with the right mood and emotion. Haven’t heard the tune before, but your version was a great appetizer, need to check out the original.

Thanks for sharing - no matter the weekday. :smiley:

Another great one-take! Your guitar sounded especially rich to me. You have the sweet spot from it to your mic, I suppose.

I’m surprised I have never heard of John Hiatt. He was born in America and has several Grammy’s. So thanks for introducing me to him. You did the song great justice. Great embellishments and Riffs; and vocals!

May I ask, do you transcribe many of your songs or do you have a teaching source? I ask that because I’m wondering if I should try to watch some of Justin’s lessons on transcribing and give it a try
. Seems it would be quite hard for me though.

As usual Gordon and his one take knocking off the competition off the stage. Brilliantly played and sung Sir!

That was really well played and sung Gordon…given that I don’t know the song I much enjoyed listening to your rendition! But when did you practice it? You were on holiday!

That was very enjoyable Gordon! :clap:

I am not familiar with the song, but I really liked your rendition. It seems to really suit your voice as well. I think your satisfied smile at the end sums it up! :smiley:

I don’t know the song or John Hiatt either but enjoyed your performance of it. So nice and chill and perfect for a relaxing Sunday (it is here in Oz :grin:)
Well played and sung too :smiling_face: :sunflower:

Hi Pam. Getting the balance right when recording with my phone is a bit hit or miss to be honest. Too many variables. How loudly I sing, how hard I strum the guitar, distance between phone and guitar. I’m pleased you enjoyed the song and the guitar tone and thanks for the kind comments.

I tend to cheat and get the chords from Ultimate Guitar (although they are often inaccurate and need a bit of fine tuning).
For the riff part of this one I listened to the original dozens of times and realised that most of the notes in it were from the chords in the song, so I worked away at the riff with that. In that sense I suppose I was doing my own transcribing. The original album version is much more complex with multiple guitar parts.

Thanks for the listen and kind comments Lisa.
As far as I know, Hiatt hasn’t had any well known ‘hits’ of his own. He’s better known as a songwriter and his songs have been covered by lots of famous artists including Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and others. His genre is rock/blues/country.

Gordon, my friend,
Some think it’s good not to get stereotyped, but I always enjoy your Wed offerings, no matter what day of the week they arrive :smiley:
Your laid-back strumming with embellishment’s and little runs, expressive vocals and even the little smile at the end of the show.
Class act. :sunglasses:

Gordon, I agree with Brian, a class act, as always. This is a great piece of music, well played and sung. I love the sound of your guitar, and the tricky riff you speak of came of great and really adds to the overall sound.

Nice one Gordon. I’ve never heard this guy at all but that was a great song and a great rendition, thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice work with the mix of picking, baselines and rhythm by the way :ok_hand:
