AlexLearns to play :)

I love reading all the other learning logs, so I will start mine also.

I’m about a week in now and will probably update this log weekly.
So far I am in Beginner 1 Module 4.

Progress so far is pretty good, I am pretty consistent in the chord change practices about hitting at least 30 changes between each chord combination.
Strumming is getting a little better but still need to be more relaxed about it, sometimes I focus too much on it then it sounds messy and just wrong sometimes

Haven’t learned much songs till now but that will definitely change once I got to C and G chords

Welcome to the forum Alexander, enjoy your guitar journey!

Little update from me:

Currently i am at Module 5 getting the C Chord Shape into my hand. It is ok for now, 3rd Finger still blocks the sound from the string above but i will get there. Anyways better than the first day where my arm and hand hurt a bit from stretch and not so optimal posture
Question there: Should i try to mute the e string with my 3rd finger also when playing on a wide fretboard like on classical guitars? At least for now it feels like a huge stretch.

Was very hyped to see that Broken by Seether was in the App with all the chords i know so far, but i will need to apply a simpler strumming pattern for now. I don‘t want to spend time (yet) to get into 16th strumming. I will definitely revisit this song later down the road with the picking part too.

Depending on witch guitar i use strumming also gets better. On the classical guitar it happens more often that i get stuck somewhere in the strumming, so i switched to my Pacifica more often.

I also have one very clear win from this week: My fingers got used to the nylon and steel strings and i can play pretty long now without getting the annoying finger pain :+1:

Motivitation is very high at the moment and i eagerly wait for every bit of free time i can get to my guitar

Good stuff!

Hey just a quick question to drop. In Justin’s app there is the song broken from Seether which I really love and would like to learn.

The strumming pattern for this in the app is

I can quick get it just by feeling but I would like to know how I count 16th and when I should be tapping my foot

Hi Alex, you would count it 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a. You would tap your foot on the beats 1, 2, 3 and 4.

This grade 2 lesson introduces all down 16th note strumming:

Thank you. Will take a look into it

Hey another update from me.

I am at the end of Grade 1 now, taking my time refining what i learned and have a bit of fun with the songs (mostly from the app right now, playing alongside the track is so much fun).
My hand got the hang of the 16th pattern from What‘s up and Broken (my foot not so, but we are working on it
After watching the last videos of the course i also tried what Justin said about strumming patterns to don’t be afraid and just try what feels good and putting a little dynamic in the songs. He was so so so right. It felt really awesome and fun today playing the songs.

I am someone who is very technical and analytical and just doing by feeling is something i am usually not very good at, so this was a great win for me today.

Some chords are still a bit challenging, looking at you A and Dm and to be honest i gave up on playing c the way justing teaches (with the thumb behind the neck). I tried it so much and the muting with my finger just never felt good for me, so I switched to muting it with my thumb.
Justins way of teaching G was a godsend, so easy and relaxing to play

Today was the first time in my guitar journey so far where i had so much fun, felt relaxed and just good. I didn’t focused so much on my mistakes like i usually do and just played for the fun of it
Don’t misunderstand me, i had fun earlier and also when i tried to learn guitar the last two times, but i always focused way to much on the things I couldn’t do or didn’t do well.
So just for that, thank you Justin and thanks to this awesome group of people here for all that positive energy.
