Am I reading this wrong? Questions about 6/8 rhythm pattterns in the App

I have been starting to work on songs in 6/8 time and to start off I have focused on Jason Aldean’s, You Make it Easy and the Pretenders, 2000 miles. But while I play it it I find myself not even close to the strumming pattern at the bottom of the screen.

I am reading this bar as 6 down strums and that’s what showing at the bottom of the screen

But as the strum pattern is “showing me the strum” it’s showing up in what appears to be half time. I say this because the green bar moves across the G chord bar above, but only three down arrow light up during that bar. So it appears the app is telling me strum down 3 times during that G chord bar and it sounds horrific.

But if I ignore the strumming pattern at the bottom of the screen and go to 6 down strums for that G chord bar shown above, things sound great.

So am I reading things wrong or is the Strum Pattern at the bottom of the screen just not timed correctly?

I have been using the app for a while now and while I’ve seen a couple hiccups in it, things really seemed off once I started working on this 6/8 timing so I am not sure if it’s something that I am doing wrong, or this is just a bigger hiccup in the app.

Thanks!

OK, no replies, so it must just be me. Moving on!

Hi Michael, I don’t have the app so I don’t know how it works.

Richard @Richard_close2u or Fanny @FannyJustinGuitar can you shed any light on this?

Fair enough… So how about a video clip. Here there are 4 bars (Em, C, G, and D) from Jason Aldean, “You Make it Easy” on the screen, but only 3 strums per bar or 12 strums total across the 4 bars shown. Should it not be showing 6 strums per bar or 24 strums a across the 4 bars total?

6-8 Time

As I listen to the lesson from Grade 1, Module 6, Lesson 4, Justin is saying, “…6 beats in the bar, but 2 strong pulses”… “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6”

Playing this by ear tells me that 6 strums are needed, so I hope this is just a problem with the app.

And it’s not that I want to say that I found something wrong, but I am only a couple months into playing so I just want to know if I am doing things correctly or not. For sure, I’ve been wrong before, and I just want to make sure I’m doing things the right way.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the JustinGuitar Community. Thanks for being an App subscriber too.

I have just opened the App, looked at both songs you mention to try to replicate what you describe, but for me, the 6 lights do light up, not just 3.

When a song is 6/8 you accent beats 1 and 4.
You best choices, besides strumming six downs, one on every beat, is to strum two downs, on beats 1 and 4 respectively.

But - as I said, I can’t replicate the fault you’re describing I’m afraid.

I have moved your topic to the appropriate section of the Community and given it a fuller, meaningful title. It should now get more views and further interaction if you still need more help.
Also, if you need to alert the App developers for any issue relating to the App, remember to write @MusopiaApps in your post.

Cheers

@Richard_close2u I appreciate you replying and moving this to a more appropriate location, but I’ll be darned if I can find where that is anywhere else in this community.

FYI… I did send a message directly to the @MusopiaApps group via email, explaining the issue I was seeing and what I got in return was a disappointing response…

Thank you for your feedback. In this 6/8 song, the app currently shows 3 main strum indicators per bar, representing the primary beats (1–2–3). If you’d prefer to play 6 strums, you can simply apply that yourself by playing the pattern in double time, even though the visual indicator stays at 3 beats.

Again, being new to all this I understand I can play double time and make it work, but I still don’t understand why the strum indicator would ever show 3 strums in a 6/8 timed bar. I can’t find any reference to there being 3 Primary Beats in 6/8 timing. As you noted in your response, there are 2 accent beats on the 1 and 4 strums, but again, nothing I can find tells me that there should or could be 3 strums in 6/8 timing.

As a side note, I thought maybe my phone (Galaxy S21) was the issue so I loaded the app up on an older Moto G6, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S23 and this 3 strum indications issue is the same on all these android phones.

So am I wrong, am I just off in believing the indicator should light up 6 times per bar in these 6/8 timed bars? It appears to me that even the 3 strum indications per bar don’t even time out with the “dots” shown in the bar above. Is it just me that doesn’t seem to see any of the timing of strum indicator or strum practice window working out with the timing in the song?

I can understand if I am wrong, but as noted, I just want to know what is right so that I can understand things clearly. If the app is wrong, so be it, I can live with that if I understand it, but I just want someone who knows what they are doing to confirm if it’s me or if the app is wrong or I am wrong.

Thanks for sharing a video capture.

Yours looks different to mine on a (fairly old) Samsung S10 smartphone.

The 6 dots below the chord are correct.
Dots 1 and 4 are slightly bigger because they are the accented beats.
Beats 1-6 inclusive are Down strums.
There are six Down arrows.
But the timing / movement across the Down arrows is not in sync for some reason.
Ignore the arrows, go by the 1 2 3 4 5 6 dots.

I said I was renaming and moving your post but it seems I had not completed that task. I’ve done it now and it is here:

Tagging @MusopiaApps to look at the video.

@Richard_close2u is lightning fast! Up 24x7 to respond to requests like mine

OK, I’m glad I’m not just nuts. Maybe I should get a S10 :slightly_smiling_face:

Now I can sleep easier knowing that I’m not just understanding this all wrong.

Thanks again!
