Just noticed this. First, I now understand why the Circle of Fifths when run counter-clockwise is called the Circle of Fourths (count them, it’s true). That was an epiphany. Second, I was practicing doing Root + Fifth exercises counter-clockwise around the CoF. Interestingly enough, the 5th of the current root naturally resolves to the next root. I’m using the Benbasset method of ear training and I can see that in practice. Sol resolved to the closest octave. Makes sense, as does this exercise: Move along the Circle of Fifths counter-clockwise performing the arpeggio of root, 5th, next root. I can do this based on intervals - but now? Now I see the note structure also!
C-G-F F-C-Bb Bb-F-Eb Eb-Bb-Ab… D-A-G G-D-C
and if you play it root, 5th, root, 5th all the way around you get a interesting jazzy sounding tune
CG FC BbF EbBb AbEb DbAb GbDb BGb EB AE DA GD CG
Still trying to wrap my head and fingers around the pattern. It’s a work in progress.
I might be just needing my morning coffee (or earwash), but while this thing you described seems interesting, I fail to hear any note resolving to any other note or any jazziness. In fact, it all sounds quite streile to me, but I might just be playing it too mechanically or slowly. These are just 1-5-4 patterns played after each other, and the fourth and fifth are the only perfect intervals apart from the octave. Should not there be some sort of harmonic background in order to speak of resolution?
Would you care to post a recording of this or link one if there’s any on YT? I really feel I’m missing something here.
I’m just wondering. With 6 years of guitar training under your belt, when did you reach the point where you lost the wonder of the music and the learning journey, and became such a musical virtuoso that you can now look down on we mere beginners with contemptuous revile, and feel it’s perfectly Ok to disparage those “Ah-ha” moments that we choose to share? Thanks kindly for the demeaning comment. “Sterile. Ain’t no jazziness in there son. Just sterility.”
This is déjà-vu that I’ve had before on this forum. This obviously isn’t a safe space to share our insight along our personal journey. One person’s “sterile” is another person’s symphony. I’m putting concepts together, making connections, and making music out of it.
What I love about Justin is his excitement about music - his passion. But what I’ve met too often “down below the decks” in his forum is the polar opposite. Express wonderment at your personal discoveries, and essentially get a virtual backhand by those who are, quite obviously, much more gifted and established musicians.
Obviously one must stay within the establish lines, don’t think outside the box, don’t experiment and play, and if you stray outside “the way everyone else does it” - don’t share. smack
@LamphunLamyai Danial why do you take everyone’s comments as a personal attack against you. I read Jozsef’s comment as a genuine quess of what he was miss by not hearing the Jazzy sound but it seem you read it as an attack on you.
Is english not your first language.
To answer your question about loosing the wonder of music and passion of learning, I’ve been playing since 1975 and still have the wonder and passion.
Keep sharing your Ah-ha moments the forum. Dr
I’m wondering why you’re accusing me of being contemptuous and lacking passion without actually knowing me. Please don’t put words that I did not say into my mouth.
My question was genuine. I tried to follow your description by playing the notes as you wrote them and could not hear what you heard. I asked if there’s any demostration of this because it’s not impossible that the effect / sound you described depends on how this thing is played, and my attempt may have been lousy. That’s all.
@Jozsef I’m confused as well. I’m not sure how this person interpreted your post as “contemptuous” or “disparaging”. The fact that you (and I) don’t hear what he/she heard, and would want his/her help to understand, is apparently too much for him/her.
Perhaps we all could have learned something from this person, but his/her assumption that “anyone who asks me a question is belittling me” kind of killed that possibility.
I meant to come to this earlier - I love a little circle of fifths discussion. unfortunately I see the conversation went wayward and insult was taken where I see none being given.
That is unfortunate. I see nothing wrong at all in the reply you received.
I have broken your text for easier reference.
Start at C.
C → G = root → 5th
G → F = 5th → 4th
C is the root. G is the 5th. F is the 4th. I’m unclear how you conclude that G naturally resolves to F.
Is that what you mean when you write the following?
Continuing …
Start at F
F → C = root → 5th
C → Bb = 5th → 4th
If you choose any note on the outer wheel of the circle of fifths and call it a root note, its 5th is immediately clockwise and its 4th is immediately counter clockwise.
That seems to be what you are doing, in repeated manner, until you return back to the start point.
Root → 5th → 4th as an iteration.
Do I read that right?
Have you read my topic on the circle of fifths - you may find some aha moments and it might tie in with your explorations here too.
