I want to know how David made that sound on his low E string, “Blowing in the Wind.”
Nancy, my signal chain for OMs is as follows: guitar & mic → TC Helicon PlayAcoustic → Audio Interface → Zoom.
The PlayAcoustic is a multi Fx unit designed for such performances. I add reverb, delay, and chorus to the guitar. Over time I tweaked those settings so that I think the guitar sounds better with them but they are not dialed up to be really obvious.
So what you hear is not a clean acoustic guitar sound. If you listen to the AVOYP I recorded the day after you will hear a difference in the guitar sound due to replacing Zoom with OBS (a recording App) in which I can double up the guitar track and pan the tracks apart, which I think makes it sound even better.
Appreciate the question. Hope the answer makes sense but if not ask more questions.
David … what output / input combination is that, and using what sort of cable?
I’m curious whether the TC sends both your guitar & vocal down one cable and into which input it gets sent.
The PA has two XLR outputs. You can setup to route the guitar and vocal separately, or a combined output, either stereo or mono.
(I think) I use the separate option when routing to both OBS and Zoom, selecting the UMC 1 & 2 option for both. But maybe when I go direct to Zoom perhaps I change to a stereo output from the PA.
I have the TC Helicon MicMechanic for voice. I think if I plug that into my speaker & use the Tonewood Amp2 that sits on the back of my guitar & use your settings & plug that into my amp as well, I might get a similar sound. It’s worth a try!
Some of what you said is like Greek to me, but I’ll try Googling it or check my Apple iPhone Apps.
Nancy, firstly free to ask about that which is like Greek. I’m quite happy to try and explain myself further.
Sounds like you have some cool gear.
I remember watching a video about that Tonewood, Justin and Mike Dawes if I recall correctly. I am sure with that you can dial-up a tone that sounds good to you.
To test my understanding . . . I assume you play your guitar with just the Tonewood and sing into a mic, routing the mic to the MicMechanic and then some kind of external standalone speaker, no Audio Interface and PC involved.
I saw your post about recording. May be helpful to share exactly how you play and what devices you have.
PS you may note I split our chat, and Richard’s question about the PlayAcoustic off to be a separate Topic. Did that just to keep this thread separate from the more general comments and replies about the OpenMic event.
