📢 An Update on the Song Library | Exciting Changes Ahead!

Hi everyone,

We’ve got some exciting updates coming to the JustinGuitar Lessons & Songs App :guitar:

Starting May 18th, we’ll be adding hundreds of new songs, with more arriving regularly throughout the spring and summer. You’ll see music from artists like:

  • Coldplay
  • Bob Dylan
  • Bob Marley
  • Imagine Dragons
  • …and many more to come!

You’ll find all the latest additions in the New Songs section in the app.

As part of this update, the song library will continue to evolve over time, which means some songs will be rotated out. We know that can be frustrating—especially if you’ve been working on a particular track—and we’re sorry for any disruption.

To help with this, we’ll let you know in advance if a song in your Songlist is affected, and we’ll suggest alternatives so you can keep your progress going.

Our goal is to keep the library growing, fresh, and full of great songs to learn and play.

If there’s something you’d love to see in the app, you can suggest it here: [Upvoty]

Thanks for being part of the community!
We can’t wait for you to dig into the new songs!

Update May 19th 2026: The first batch of catalogue changes is now live. They are featured in the “New Songs” section and look out for the “NEW” tag on songs.

May I ask why you need to rotate songs out? Regards

It has to do with copyright and legal windows. Rights to use this kind of content tend to have a volatile nature; in time of usage, in ownership, in location of portfolio. It’s almost as fluid as currency

So, in most of the cases it is not by choice of JustinGuitar or Musopia but based on what the package or rights they are subscribed to and what their scope is in any given moment in time.

Interesting update Lieven!

It has been a while since I have last used the app, it was very important early on, but I remember getting a bit disappointed when there started being more synthesized (MIDI-like) songs and less band recordings.

What’s the state with this update, are they mostly recordings or synthesized songs?

There are loads of other websites with guitar tab and/or lyrics, song lessons, etc. Some paid, some free. A couple of the big ones in particular that I use for tab. They don’t seem to have this vague “copyright” problem. Why is it such a challenge at JustinGuitar? I ask only because it doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

They might simply not be asking…

Justin pays royalties, he has professional, legally negotiated arrangements with copyright holders and publishers and ensures that those whom are legally entitled to payment for their work receive their due amount.
He is fully transparent about this and upholding an ethical and legal position is of great importance to him and his business approach.

Hi @heckler

Early on, we relied more on MIDI-style tracks, especially while building out the song library and practice features.
With the updates over the past couple of years, those MIDI-style tracks are now mainly used in Practice Mode within the song player. For many songs, we’ve added Vocal+ and full band backing tracks to create a much more natural and enjoyable playing experience.
Going forward, our focus is heavily centered on real band-style and vocal-supported tracks. We’re also planning to gradually phase out many of the older MIDI-based tracks over time. Future song additions will ideally feature only band backing and vocal options for a higher-quality overall experience.

For many websites, this is indeed the case.

@Richard_close2u pointed out, Justin plays by the book and won’t get into trouble. Even when trying to be all kosjer, he still had some copyright lawyers in his mailbox in the past

Adding some feedback based on the recent song removals and replacements.

Hi,

I really like the song system in the app, especially:

  • chord diagrams
  • strumming patterns
  • simplified play-along structure

This makes practicing much easier and more structured.

I also understand licensing changes are a reality, and songs will need to rotate in and out. Because of that, better filtering and mapping tools are even more important during these transitions.

Current issues I am running into:

  • Chord filter is too limited to match songs to lesson level
  • The chord filter appears capped at selecting only a small number of chords, which makes it harder to match early lesson stages with limited chord sets
  • No filtering by grade level or module
  • Module song lists appear incomplete
  • Some songs in Justin’s lesson plan that are available in the app are not shown in the corresponding module song lists
  • Replacement songs don’t indicate equivalent level or module

Current filtering capabilities are very limited:

  • Basic chord selection
  • An “Advanced chords” checkbox
  • Genre filter
  • Sort options

There are no filters for:

  • Grade level
  • Module level
  • Specific lesson within a module

Because of this, it’s very difficult to find songs that match a specific point in the learning path.

Example:

If “La Bamba” is replaced, a key part of that lesson is learning push rhythm.

The suggested replacements:

  • Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On
  • Do You Want to Dance
  • Care

There is no clear way to tell if these match the same learning goal (grade, module, or rhythm).

In particular, they do not clearly match the push rhythm focus, and there is no way to filter songs by rhythm or strumming style to find an equivalent.

At scale this becomes difficult:

  • Too many songs to manually evaluate
  • No simple way to cross-reference to the lesson plan

This makes it hard to answer:
Which songs should I practice for my current lesson?

Suggestions:

  1. Expand the chord filter so it can better match songs to chords being learned

  2. Improve filtering options beyond just chords, including:

    • Chord set limits for early-stage learning
    • Chord progression or structure types where applicable
  3. Add filtering by:

    • Grade level
    • Module level
    • Specific lesson within a module
  4. Add keyword-based tagging for songs to support skill-based searching, for example:

    • push rhythm
    • specific strumming patterns
    • other lesson-focused techniques
  5. Ensure module lists include all relevant songs from the full catalog

  6. When providing replacement songs, indicate their equivalent grade level or module

Previously the strength of the app was:
Lesson → Songs → Practice

That connection feels incomplete right now.

Thanks for considering this feedback.

How long will the songs deemed going away stay on the app? Also, this is the best playable app out there…

Wonderful, very valuable feedback I will make sure the nice people at Musopia will read!

Edit: they will be deleted in several steps and by Sept 1 2026, all the foreseen songs will be deleted. I can’t tell exactly which song will be deleted when though.

I have no idea how many songs are being dropped but 2 of my favourites are soon to be out the door which is really frustrating as I am right in the middle of learning them both.
What’s Up by 4 non blondes is a great track for learning to sing along whilst playing and Get Lucky by Daft Punk is another song that helps with speeding up my chord changes.
Both are very recognisable and great for impressing your long suffering wife as they evolve from a garbled jangle to an actual song.
Anyone suggest a site where I can download the tabs?
I am not happy…

Hey Tim!

What are the 2 songs you’re looking for?

I supplement Justin’s App with Ultimate Guitar… the free version is a bit limited but I can often find more than one option for a song I am interested in… also they have “shots” which are short videos of other people playing the song… it can be helpful to see other’s take on strumming strategies etc…

Have fun!

Tod

The songs were in my post. What’s up by 4 non blondes and Get Lucky by Daft Punk.
