Started out thinking about a book I read many years ago: Martin Buber’s I and Thou. Connected a central theme in the book to a scenario that I made up for an ethics class that I taught years ago. In the scenario, a very popular girl on campus is actually using all the friends she makes to get them to buy music she suggests. Turns out she’s working for a company that promotes music. In my classes I was surprised to learn that some of my students thought this was just fine, that even though the girl was deceiving people and using them to make money, as some students put it, “everyone is using everyone else in some way.” Anyway, that’s what this song is about.

Nice song, Jay. Great voice and playing too. Interesting about that ethics class. Sounds like many failed getting ethics. It’s ok if everyone else is doing something wrong too? What a sad outlook. Anyway, good song.
