Arvind's Learning Log

Hi! Today I complete 3 weeks since I started learning guitar. Im in Grade one Module 4 so far. Dm is tricky, and the chord changes between Am to Em and Any chord to D/Dm is still not in place im managing 15-18 changes per min for these. Some chords are at 30 changes in one minute, and some are close to 40 (A to D).

I also feel like a spectator at a tennis match. constantly turning my neck between the fret board and the sound hole to identify proper finger placement and the right strings to strum.

The last few days I have been running the practice assistant on the site everyday from Module one routine through module four Skipping the 10min song session in all routines except the last one. (I practice the 10min song play along at the end of the session) I have been making time to do this twice a day, once in the morning and once later in the day.

Am I progressing at a pace faster than I should be? Here’s my practice chart from the site. This doesnt include the riffs i try to play out of the practice routines, so the total time might be a bit higher.

Goals: Learn all the chords, and make smooth chord transitions by the end of Grade 1. Also learn a few riffs I can play well and feel like I have slayed it.

Hey Arvind! Welcome to your new favorite hobby!

I think the only person who can answer if you’re progressing at a faster pace than you “Should” be is yourself, if you are taking on too many new concepts at the same time without enough time to understand it before moving on to more new concepts, it might be a bit too fast. Everyone progresses at a different rate and the only person you should really compare yourself is to is the person you were yesterday. I totally get what you mean about feeling like a spectator at a tennis match, that will fade with time without a doubt.

I also think at your point practicing chord changes are a great thing to practice, my 11-year-old son is also a beginner and I was getting him to practice chord changes every day and he’s progressed quite a bit with those. Now if I could just get him to focus long enough to learn a song from start to finish…

Thanks Hec! I don’t know about confidence yet… but I am finding it enjoyable for sure!

Thanks Ryan!

I get it! yeah… i know i shouldn’t be comparing progress at all and I’m trying not to. I am trying to keep a steady pace for the lessons so that I do not burn out or get frustrated and bored.

I hope so too! Cheers mate!

Day 24
A day of Light practice of Module 4. Am to Dm chord changes still not happening smoothly.

Started the Lessons of Module 5 today and learnt the C Chord! Hope to pick up the guitar atleast twice a day for the remainder of the week! Cheers!

Day 32

Took a few days off posting here. Was still on the guitar every day. I have worked upto Module 6 of the beginners grade one. Chord Changes are getting better.

I have also learned the strumming pattern and chord progressions for the beginning of Wonderwall!
