Balanced vs unbalanced cables, when and why

So doing a little reading looking for cables to connect my pre amp pedal to my AI as I don’t have that type.

When do you use one of these cables vs the other.

Hi Rachel ,

Hope this clear the air?

So purely based on A to B distance and possibly interference from another source.

What gives you the impression that I understand this? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I once quickly looked it up for him and didn’t read it myself or at least not remember the how and what:blush:

I just hoped that it would help you too

Basically, yes.

Balanced cables reject electrical noise better than unbalanced.

Over short cable runs, the difference is normally negligible.

Yes. And, there are like “weak” signals, mainly from electric guitars and from microphones, which are when going through that cable, more susceptible to be disturbed by those external electromagnetic disturbances.
I mean, that unwanted “stuff” adds to your music signal and is more significant than when you already have a “strong” signal in the cable.

But then, while mics often are prefered to be clean, in electric guitars it’s often not found to be SO important to have the best, most clean signal possible… that’s why you (in our home studio world) find balanced cables normally just in mic cables.

Thank you everyone.

I’m gonna sulk, it’s already been answered and I’ve been through that one myself
