I want to get the bass tone similar to the one in Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. Mellow fat tone. Any tips how to achieve it in general? I use Squire Affinity PJ bass and I have boss and zoom processor. I need a general idea on how to get close to that tone. Any help would be appreciated
I’m among the last people who should be commenting on a tone question - on bass nonetheless! - but I found this on Reddit:
There are no bass effects on Wicked Game…. It’s almost certainly a P-Bass (most of Rowland Salley’s observable work has been done on a Precision) possibly with some compression, but it’s about as unaffected as a bass sound can be. Per wikipedia the drums and bass are loops from earlier demos which might be giving them that very steady dreamlike dynamic and feel.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help Judi, although I know some general info on this, but still struggling to dial the exact tone for my productions.
You won’t find it easy because it’s done with a mic’d up Amp not DI, there’s something more ‘organic’ about that way. It’s part of the reason why I got a Bass amp, to me it just sounds nicer.
The sound being used is clean and with very little gain plus it does sound compressed to me but not overdone, you might try a bit of light spring reverb, if you want it spot on you need to think out of the box sometimes and try things.
I do have an amp but its a small one. Fender Rumble 15. Maybe I can try micing that.
Nothing to loose by trying, it’s all part of the fun!
