Ever felt like you’re hitting all the right notes but still missing the soul of the Blues? You’re not alone! The real magic lies in feeling the music, and many players get caught up overthinking technique.
But here’s the truth: when you connect with the music, everything clicks. Join Justin in the final Blues Club of the year and learn how to tap into that natural, expressive sound that’ll take your playing to the next level!
The #1 Blues Mistake To Watch Out For!
Date: December 5th 2024
Time: 20:30 UTC
Where: YouTube
I didn’t watch live but have watched most of the recording.
Have to say that I am bit disappointed with this ‘masterclass’ which was about 15mins of Justin performing and telling us where we are going wrong and the rest was a marketing exercise for BLIM 2. Not quite what I was expecting from the title of the class.
Justin (or Jus!) notes that playing the minor pentatonic doesn’t sound bluesy. He may well be right but you have to start somewhere and as far as I recall (I’m on grade 3) this is what he has taught so far. When do we get to the blues bit?
He also notes that, as blues is a language, you have to learn the words (licks) and join them to make sentences (phrases). I get this, but if you only know 5 licks then the sentences are always going to be short! Still a lot to learn I guess.
So overall disappointed with the class especially as I took time out from practice to sit down to watch this.
Either Fanny or Laryne acknowledged it with a reply pointing to the fact that it was led the the sheer volume of questions about Blues Immersion.
For anyone not interested in BLIM but wanting some basic blues tips and practical guidance, such as yourself, will probably be feeling a similar disappointment.
Hopefully your needs will be better served in future live sessions or clubs and, of course, the website lessons.
Hmm…I see it differently…
This is the first club recording I’ve watched. The title drew me in. I thought it would be a good idea to find out what the number 1 mistake is that I’m probably about to make!
Glad I watched it too. It’s made me re-think how I practice the Blues.
The big takeaway for me is to work on making it sound musical, make it sound bluesy. I’m not guilty of playing scales up and down to a backing track but I can see that I’ve been ’just playing the notes’!
I don’t mind it being a plug for Blim because it’s a course I’m interested in and I’ve found out a bit more about it.
Hey guys, this feedback has been passed along to the team, and we hear you. Apologies if the session wasn’t what you expected.
We didn’t intend for the BLIM questions to take over, but it ended up going in that direction. We’ll make sure to keep a better balance next time and clearly communicate when it’s BLIM-related, while still providing useful info for those interested. We appreciate you still joining, and I hope to still see you in our next live streams.
Thanks for sticking around and sharing your thoughts!
