A friend asked me a few weeks ago if I could play Starman by David Bowie. I admitted that I didn’t as i remembered that when I considered learning it a few years ago I saw lots of barre chords and avoided it. So I gave it a go and pulled together my best effort - obviously it needs a fair bit of refinement but I wanted to record a version that I could then use to work with going forward.
Starman
As I was in a recording mood and specifically thinking of Bowie after watching the most recent documentary (The Final Act), i thought I would have a go at recording (for the first time) the Bowie songs I had learnt previously (as well as Starman). My wife thought I was never going to leave my music room on Sunday but I was determined to record all the songs. In hindsight, maybe I should have taken more time as they are a bit rough and one or two are played too fast (think I was getting hungry). Apologies to any die hard Bowie fans for not taking more time and care, but after watching the documentary I just wanted to record my praise to Bowie’s (imo) genius.
Really nice playing and singing. Listening to those covers on back while doing some Excel stuff, making my Excel stuff more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
What an excellent selection of Bowie covers. I too am a big Bowie fan and have 10 of his albums on vinyl, I need to get copies of Let’s Dance and Station to Station.
‘The Man Who Sold The World’ is a favourite of mine and I thought you sang it very well and the others were all good as well. I would love tote able to play and sing, something I tried but never seems to work, maybe when I have finished my second pass of BLIM in June, I should make a concerted effort to have a go. I seem to remember Bowie said if it wasn’t for Mick Ronson putting simple licks and live into the songs on the 70’s albums he would probably not have made it, somehow i think he would, he was that talented and driven. Prince was another Ikon like him in my book, extremely versatile and unique.
Love the guitar collection by the way, a couple of 335 types I spy, another favourite of mine.
Incredible. That’s quite some afternoon’s work. When I requested that song I didn’t expect an entire Greatest Hits album. There’s only one possible comment really … you’re a Star, man !! (apologies for the dad joke )
You’ve done well to get a handle on so many different songs, lyrics and strumming patterns. Heroes and Ashes to Ashes were perhaps the best of the bunch. Take a bow(ie)!

Cheers Adrian - hope you track down your missing vinyls. Hope you are also mastering BLIM on your second run through - I intend doing the same thing starting this week and intend to give my electric guitar collection a good work out for the foreseeable future. As for singing, I certainly don’t think I am in any way good but as long as I know the song backwards (lyrics, phrasing, rhythm and playing), then I can most times arrive at an acceptable tune. When I started trying to play and sing (about 2 years ago), I (and my wife!) thought that my singing was well below average - it has definitely improved with practice and perseverance and now I think it is maybe just about average!
@GraemeCaUK - thanks Graeme - as we’ve discussed, I think I’ve worn out my acoustic over the last few months so now it’s back to BLIM and all things electric.
@beejay56 - thanks Brian - I’d love to be able to play them all with a bit more accuracy, better timing and some of Lieven’s chord embellishments - lots to work on, along with hundreds of other songs I want to learn!!
