Californication Cover - 1 year progress video

That was fantastic! I can guarantee that I was not doing that in a year. Bravo!

Excellent Cover JK, . And What a pro set up with the go pro and everything. Indeed an interesting point of view. I have one somewhere for my motorbike trips. I could get a new use for it :stuck_out_tongue:

YES JK! That was superb my friend. You nailed that one good and proper. I didn’t notice any mistakes though.

I loved the camera angle down the guitar neck. The solo was sweeeeeet.

An excellent song to pick and what a way to celebrate 1 year of guitar.

Bravo!!!

@SgtColon Thanks Stefan, glad you enjoyed it

I know I’m a year off on this but I came across it looking at different covers of this song in the community. I’m working through Module 8 right now and this is one of the songs I’m working on. I’m also about 1-year into learning guitar. Very well done playing this song all the way through with all the transitions and everything at the original song speed and throwing the solo in as well! Amazing.

Things I’m struggling with in this song:
My ring finger likes to sometimes mute the 6th string and/or almost always the 4th string (when playing the bass emulation) when playing the F chord part of the main riff.

I haven’t even moved onto the C-G-F-Dm riff piece yet although I have strummed the open chords in just trying to play along with the song a couple times.

Keeping the strumming consistent and at speed with the Am-Fmaj7 part.

The G to Dm transition part of the chorus.

Seeing you play through it like this makes me want to get an electric guitar and keep on with the learning of this song! RHCP are one of my favorite bands.

Hey, @Andy_15, thanks for the comment and for pulling this one out of the vault .

There are definitely some bits on this song that are tricky when starting out - in the grand scheme of songs though, it’s a slow pace and not too complex so makes a pretty good stepping stone.

Some tips with what you’re struggling with:

In this cover I didn’t play the bass emulation - I left it for Flea - but I did (and still do) when playing solo. If you can play the guitar part clean without the bass fills, you can do it clean with it just takes practice. However I find I have to maneuver my ring finger to get it clean with extra muting during the bass part.

No time like the present. Just start practicing it. When I started with that it was excruciatingly slow going as I was new to those grips and picking arpeggios (with string skipping!). It’s literally the hardest part of the song. But it’s only 4 chords so easy to remember. Drill it every day and you’ll get it, and then those skills stay for other arpeggios.

I find strumming easy (ex-drummer) - but make sure you’re using a medium or thin pick for this kind of funk strumming. I use orange tortex. Chord transitions is just practice.

Then you HAVE to get an electric! Most RHCP songs are electric. And electric is WAY easier for this kind of playing than acoustic.

Thanks for the feedback. I will keep practicing the pieces of this song that I’m finding challenging. I think it’s a good idea to just work that difficult 4-chord arpeggio into my practice schedule. Since the riff is coming along ok I will switch in the 4-mins for practice on the C-G-F-Dm.

Maybe Santa will bring me an electric guitar! My wife will love that

Just take your time. It took me about 7 or 8 month to learn it and be able to play consistently. Btw, even the solo can be played on acoustic, you just have to move everything from 2nd and 3rd strings to 1st and 2nd, but it doesn’t sound right without a bit of gain, so better learn chords behind solo.

Just looked at this video, learning to play the whole song (just have some “issues” on the chords that i have to learn in good order now ). That video editing was great ! Would love to do something like that with my gopro but couldn’t even know how to start editing
Timing in switching from one camera to the other in the video is just perfect!
Well done !!!

Hey Cyril, thanks for checking the vid out! I do the same, watching other people’s videos to see how they played a song when I’m learning it.

The video editing - tbh I hadn’t done it before, this was my first time doing multicam, but it’s surprisingly easy! Record 2 video tracks and sync up the audio, and then in the video editor just play it through in multicam mode and click every time you want it to change video. Do it in time with the music and it ends up looking decent :sunglasses:

Hey thanks for the kudos @Guitarman63 and @bigluc , this one was recorded a while ago in late 2022

Repetitions, time and time again. I don’t know an easier way. When I started practicing this one it was far, far, outside my comfort range so I practiced the riffs every day (sometimes a couple of times a day) for a long time.

Sounds like a good reason for an update.

Hah, maybe one day. I’m not sure it would be noticeably different. The main difference would be I could just pick up the guitar now and play it without practice - probably with a couple of run throughs to work some parts of the solo out again.

That is pretty awsome after 1 year JK  you still play it or is it put too rest?

Still play it sometimes @tRONd, usually when I’m just mucking around digging through repertoire!

Cool.
You keep everything you have learned «alive» ?

I try too do that. Go back and fill in some embellishments along the way.
But i can see that some of the things are put away pretty deep into the closet… and a couple og things i dont touch again…

Nah not everything @tRONd, I’ve done too many songs to keep them all in my head. The ones I’ve listened to and played a huge amount just stick in there… the rest I remember are just my favourites. I often sit down with a guitar outside and try to play as much of my repertiore as I can. Some I can do the whole song even if I haven’t played them in ages, others take a bit more figuring out.

@jkahn this popped up in latest and I’d forgotten you did this. Great cover. Started learning this one for the band last week. Almost there but listening to yours my tricky bits are exactly the same as yours. The transition from first part of the verse to second ( particularly when not looking ) and that shift from the end of the solo into the first Am chord… impossible… so I’m doing the same as you and starting back on the F.

Almost got the exact tone using my LP, Marshall Amp and Boss CE chorus on the PodGo.

Great song to play and sing though real energy…into the polishing stage now… then maybe OM or AVOYP
