Can i rest this part of my hand when playing chords

Hey, I’m a beginner, I’m on grade 1 module 3 and I’m wondering can I rest highlighted part of the hand on the image or maybe should I only use my thumb on the back of the neck?

I don’t find I put that part of my hand on the neck when I play much. Sometimes maybe, but it don’t seem often. I do put from the tip of my thumb to the first joint on the neck for some chords. Like D, where I’m using my thumb to mute the bottom two strings. I seem to use my thumb for muting the bottom strings or sometimes to play a fretted bottom string. Putting near my palm on the neck would deter me doing this I think.
For sure I don’t rest that part of my hand on the neck when I’m playing any barre chord. My thumb moves to the back of the neck.
When playing cowboy chords that part of my thumb seems to come close to resting on the neck, but it don’t quite touch the neck.
Generally, I’d think that that part of your hand should not be in contact with the neck, generally.
I’m not the pro here so, ymmv. I don’t know know where, but surely Justin addresses this somewhere in his lessons for us.

Hi Michal. You will learn over time that mostly want your thumb pointing perpendicular to the guitar neck, directly behind the chord you are playing (except when using it to mute or fret the low strings). Try to keep your thumb from pointing back toward the headstock. This will naturally pull the palm part of your thumb away from the guitar. This thumb placement is especially important when you get to barre chords.

Appreciate the comment. I will try to avoid using this part of finger and see how it goes.

Put your thumb in the middle of the neck like Justin tells you to. He getting you to build up strength in your thumb and preparing your for barre chords. If you start resting that part of you thumb now you will have pain there when learning barre chords.

Thank you for your comment. My thumb is pointed perpendicular so I guess it’s not a problem, but as you and others pointed out I should stop using that partof hand to strenghten my muscles for bar chords.

Thanks, I will start doing that.
