Cissy Strut - The Meters (guitar cover)

Looking for guitar instrumentals to cover seeing as I cannot sing
This has always been a firm favourite.

Not too happy with the tone, I know things always sound different when listening back to yourself but as I was playing it there was a lot more bite in the high end of the stabs, they kind of get lost in the mix in the final product and are a bit “quacky”. Finding that tone is now becoming one of my big gripes when doing these videos, so any pointers welcome. Maybe its all in the hands!

Recorded via my Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb into Reaper with original audio extracted from the song using Moises app.

PS sorry its out of focus alot of the time

I dunno Neil, sounded real good to me!
To say it another way, I ‘liked your tone’. From my end ya were all tuned in.

Really good playing too, ya done very good with this tune.
I’ve no real pointers at all as I liked what you did and it sounded real good to me.
fwiw, them deluxe reverbs sound stellar to me too. They sound like Rock and Roll or perhaps in this case like some funk?

Thanks for sharing. I dig yer gear and I dig your playing.
A enjoyable listen!

Wow thanks for the kind words Jim, glad you liked it!

The tonemaster is really great in the room, with the volume set low and the attentuator set loud with some reverb and tremelo on the clean tone is really lovely. It can break up a bit with the volume up higher (especially with humbuckers) but if into proper hi gain rock stuff, ACDC or harder, a distortion pedal would be required I think.

Handy for recording as it has an XLR out so can go straight to audio interface!

Sounds all ok to me Neill can’t go wrong with that mate cheers Hec

You’re probably too self-critical: that was a fine performance. If you’re wanting to tweak the set up on the guitar or any of the other gear, to make the recordings sound better or more like what you’re after, you’ll need to start from a ‘benchmark’ set up. If your current recordings are that benchmark it sounds good to me. Look forward to hearing what comes next.

It really doesn’t matter  The music is strongly ‘in focus’, pin-sharp. I like your performance a lot. Great strat sound in both the solo line and funky chords. Great work! :+1:

Wow, Neil, you’re good! Amazing performance! The headline says “Guitar day 640”. Does it mean that you first started less than two years ago? What grade are you currently in?

Thanks everyone for your nice words. Gives me a confidence boost! Going to try and get out there and find/start a band or at least regularly play with others.

Yes, @oleg_vorona I started in August 2023. I finished grade 3 after a few months (I play several hours a day on average). I don’t follow the grades at the moment I just do my own thing. I watch some videos from time to time but just focusing on learning covers, creating my own instrumental tracks and improvisation.

What about you?

Yes, if you started 640 days ago, than you definitely look like somebody who plays several hours a day on average. You’re very skilled, Neil, an amazing progress!
As for me, I started 10 years ago, but played occasionally sometimes with a couple months without the guitar. I play more last 8 months and I’m currently in the Beginner Grade 3. But my focus is mainly on singing, I play pretty basic rhytmic parts.

Thanks man

Nice one! If you can sing then it automatically makes your playing 3x better haha :joy:

Yeah I think time spent and consistency is the key isn’t it. Starting later was helpful for me as there’s so much to information on the Internet now and I’m a bit more disciplined than my younger self!

Tone worked well with the funky groove Neil. Nice to get down and funky now and then, not a lot of it around these parts. Maybe someone Got The Funk Out ?
Nice one.
