To follow the John Denver version on YouTube I have to use an A-F#m-E-D-A chord progression.
Hello @ted_anna and welcome to the Community.
Justin has deliberately changed the key of the song so that the chords required to play a versio of it and more beginner friendly. He has moved the entire key down two semitones from A to G.
Look at this comparison:
A ==> ==> G
A major ==> ==> G major
F# minor ==> ==> E minor
E major ==> ==> D major
D major ==> ==> C major
==> ==> represents two semitones down in pitch.
