Cover - Letter To God - Sheryl Crow

I’m about ready to give up trying to play with a backing track. I don’t think I have the proper equipment to do it correctly. Either the track is too loud and I can’t hear myself playing or visa versa. Anyway, this is my latest attempt at it.

Nice tight strumming and chord changes Greg, very good IMO. What are you recording with, if it is a mobile phone or laptop these can be difficult. If you have a computer a reasonable usb mic will help.

I use a Samson G-Track pro usb mic. It records well and can be switched to omnidirectional, just need to do a couple of test recordings to get balance between guitar and backing track. I record directly on a MacBook using Photobooth, on windows there are similar apps to record video.

Greg

The balance on this is not too bad: your consistent strumming is perfectly audible in the mix. Well played!

I use a Q2n-4k video camera with X/Y configured stereo microphones. I separate the track with the Moises app to remove the acoustic guitar. In this video, I recorded myself and the track together. I played the track through Edifier M3 monitors. I have recorded myself 1st and added the track afterwards in Clip Champ. Either way I have to be able to listen to the track while I play and that’s where I have an issue with the volume balance. I’ll just keep experimenting. THANKS!

Thank you.

Hi Greg -

I think that sounded great, balance was pretty good imho.

It’s always going to be difficult to get the balance perfect if you are playing the backing track live in the room and recording both the ambient background track and guitar at the same time using the same mic.
I think most people solve this by loading the BT into a DAW and playing the BT in headphones while recording in the DAW - you record the guitar separately from the BT and can adjust volumes of each post recording. It is of course more faff to set this up

Haven’t recorded myself playing over a BT so can’t comment on that aspect but your playing is nice, rhythmic and sounds good…that’s the main part. I think you’ll solve the recording issue with help from the community.

Greg - pop some headphones on one ear, play along and just record the guitar, and then mix it with the track - you can use something like Garageband on Mac or Audacity on PC, it’s a new skill to learn, but you’ll get a great result, and it’s very rewarding.

But that said - you’re playing great - consistent and confident! Great stuff!

Thanks! The only problem is I’m 90% deaf in my right ear!  :joy: I’ll try it anyway. Maybe if I crank up the right side enough it will work. I appreciate your advice and kind words. Have a great day!

Nicely done! I clicked through to your profile page to see what other songs you had done, and watched the video for Willin’ ('cause I absolutely love that song) from Sept-22. It was pretty good, but man, the improvement you’ve made from then to now in your playing is really significant.

In the end, I think that’s what we’re all here for, so congrats on that!

Thank you. It’s sometimes hard to assess one’s own progress. Recording yourself is probably the best way to do so. BTW, I’ve kept Willin’ as part of my regular play list and believe I play it a bit better now.

I’m glad you didn’t give up! Very consistent and nice playing!
I imagine it’s hard, but you did well mixing your guitar and the backing track and if you don’t have additional devices to help you, don’t worry too much!
