My cover of Ghosts by Lau. Beautifully written, I believe after the Morcombe Bay Cockle Pickers tragedy when 22 Chinese workers were drowned when caught by an incoming tide.
Still fiddling about with production using some of the hints and tips suggested here. Also did a recent studio recording where I got the opportunity to ask the engineer some techy questions which was handy.
I remember the disaster clearly. It was the month before we moved to the Wirral, from where you can look across the water to Morecambe Bay when it’s clear.
I couldn’t believe they introduced a ‘Gangmasters’ act in parliament as a result
Oh, very poignant and well-performed song btw. I didn’t know it. Cheers
Beautiful rendition of a haunting song…
It brought tears to my eyes & a melancholy feeling to my soul.
I really enjoy your posts so much!
Thank you for sharing!!!
That was very good. Lovely voice and a really super recording. Perfect mix of the guitar and vocals. Were you using one mic or one line for your guitar and a second for the vocals? It sounded very good.
Beautifully sung and played, sir. The soft, slight raspiness like a whisper of your voice lent an additional element to it. Your voice sounds a lot like Gordon Lightfoot’s. I’d not heard of this tragedy and had to look it up. I noticed right off the window behind you. The light kept changing a bit, probably causing the hazy appearance of you playing, but that also lent a bit of eeriness to the song, almost ghostlike. On other songs, if possible, consider putting the light shining on you, with you facing the light, so we can see you playing more clearly. Good idea to change the key of a song to suit your voice. I’m wondering what key you settled on. Thanks for posting that. Keep up the amazingly great work!
Many thanks Ian. One mic on a set of cheap headphones bought in a petrol station plugged into the phone and the mic part blue tacked to the top of the guitar facing up towards me.
Really glad you enjoyed it Craig. Their singer made a video on youtube on how to play it as he does which I had nailed but I couldn’t hit the notes with my own voice to a standard I was happy with so I had to come up with my own arrangement. Happy enough.
Thanks Jim. I settled on D playing a C shape with the capo on the second fret enabling easier hammer ons and note selection. I needed to take the edge off the high notes a smidge.
Regarding the video, there was dirt on the lens after I rubbed it. I’m somewhat less of a perfectionist. I knew it was dirty but wasn’t that discombobulated about it.
That lighting effect definitely added to that particular song. I also forgot to mention the hammer-ons. Well done on those. Perfectly added, and also added a bit of a haunting feel to the song. Well done!
