Curlypauls Highway to Hell

I’ve been over thinking this one for so long I can’t tell anymore, so really would like honest feedback on the verse.

Solo is getting there, needs more swagger and I fluffed the end, but getting there.

Also, I’ve been made aware that soundcloud is a complete pain if you don’t have an account. I’ll get video next time as i assume everyone here has a youtube account.

Hey Paul,

Had a quick listen. Good effort man.

One initial, but critical point if I may.
The main riff starts on the ‘&’ of beat 3.
It’s what gives this classic song it’s distinct ‘push’; anticipating that downbeat at the beginning of the next bar

You are starting the riff on this downbeat ‘1’ ; way too late. As such, you lose the distinct vibe of the riff…
Have a listen to the original again, and try to hear where Angus comes in.

Cheers, Shane

What do you mean “downbeat 1”?

Do you mean the intro part, or throughout?

Sorry for the questions, but I know about the odd count, and the last phrase ends on the 1, leaving the rest half a beat shorter.

I agree though, I’m not convinced it’s always right

Hey Paul,

I’m referring to the downbeat in the next bar.
Best thing to do is just listen, and ‘feel’ the count.

Listen to Angus on the riff.
Then listen to yours.
The difference will become clear.

Cheers, Shane

@shane, respectfully, I think you are wrong. This is the structure of the verses (only downbeats provided, but I agree the riff starts on & after 3).

This cannot be true, because he would overlap with the backing track vocals during the verses! If you listen to his take, he doesn’t overlap; there is a clear “riff first then vocal” structure in his playing, same as in the original and in my picture above. I think he does start on 3, instead of & after 3, but this is a small issue to me.

Bravo for working on this classic Paul.

This is crucial. Timing is everything to get ‘simple’ AC/DC riffs to sound right.

Here are two contrasting notations. I am not giving tab - you know the chord grips - but rhythmic placement with a count above every chord and every rest.

This is your version.

This is a correct version.

Here are the two back to back.

Sorry to disagree Boris.
It is a huge issue and makes the feel all wrong.

Yes, Richard, you are right. He is starting on 4 instead of & after 3 (1/8th note late), but he is definitely not starting on 1 downbeat, as that would overlap completely with vocals. That was my point.

In which case, I do agree with you !!

Paul starts on beat 4, not beat 1.

@Richard_close2u wow thank you for the high effort answer, thats closer to where I think I’m going wrong.

It’s the all down strums that break my usual sense of rhythm, combined with over thinking it.

Going to practice now

They are all down strums, the on and the off beats, take it slowly and use deliberate counting-out-loud.

Been playing around in audacity and my rests all seem to the correct length, I’m just half a beat too late throughout the entire verse. If i shift it forward it comes to life and stays roughly in time, but the chorus and solo fall apart.

Triple checked my lag settings and tried to make excuses around the backing not being entirely the same, but I need to mentally shift the entire thing.

yeah all downs on every beat, but the way I do the slow count out loud practice is so tightly coupled with alternate strumming/picking I’d have to count in 16ths. I guess i should work on that

Ok I’m going back to blaming the backing, the count in is faster than the actual drummer and the tempo changes quite a lot.

So do the original band, but not as much and its quite interesting that they fall back into line with the click when they slow back down again. Pretty sure they would not have had a click.

I’m determined to nail this.

Yep, on a second listen, you are right; it is @ beat 4, not the 1 of the next bar.

It’s actually a big issue. Starting on the off beat ‘&’, rather the the downbeat of 3, is what creates thi ‘push’.

Cheers, Shane

Paul

Well played and a fair amount of swagger!

Great!

It actually makes me feel better to see that I’m not the only one struggling. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You’re definitely on the right track, everything is there. It just needs a little more spice and you’ll have it!

You’ve got the rhythm part, you’ve got the solo… there’s really not much missing. But that’s where it gets tricky: making the whole thing sound smooth and natural.

I’m at exactly the same stage with another AC/DC song, and I have no idea how long it’s going to take me to get there!
