Curtis Mayfield - People Get Ready - lead guitar study

This is something I’ve been working on lately, inspired by a couple of very helpful online lessons.

I performed this song on a JG Open Mic last April. This is an instrumental version that puts together some lead guitar work.
This is the first song that I started working on with my band, only a few months ago.

I hope you enjoy it.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Been a while I guess since I’ve heard that song so it took me quite a few bars to get in tune with the melody. Once there it was a pleasure to listen to your performance.

This was fantastic Erion, you played it really well! That new guitar sings, I love the tone you dialed there. I am also glad to read you play in the band. Nothing better than playing with people!

We covered this song in my school some time ago. If I remember correctly, you can experiment with timing in this song - try playing a bit before the beat, then a bit after the beat. You can leave sometimes a bit longer pause and then play faster those few notes to catch up. Together with loud/soft, this creates great dynamics and makes it super interesting. Just something to think about and explore.

Awesome, Erion!
Either you didn’t mention your band yet or I missed it!
Too bad I’m not close to come and see a gig!
Me too, remember you played it at the OM! You always have great performances there!

That was great Erion. Nice to see/hear your new guitar in action. I didn’t know that piece of music but it sounded lovely.

Like Dominique, I don’t remember hearing about your band. Is that a new thing?

Super stuff Erion! Sounds great. Awesome to hear to playing with a band - you’ll see your playing improve dramatically - it’s the best accelerator there is imho!

Hi Ian, some info on the song for you and others not familiar with it. I used to sing it in a gospel chord over 20 years ago and remember it form the 60’s when released.

℅ Wiki " In 2021, Rolling Stone named “People Get Ready” the 122nd greatest song of all time.[3] The song was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. “People Get Ready” was named as one of the Top 10 Best Songs of All Time by Mojo music magazine, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2015, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry due to its “cultural, historic, or artistic significance”"

Thanks all for the kind words.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this song, many famous artists have covered it in the last 60 years since it was originally released by Curtis Mayfield with The Impressions in 1965.

My favourite version is this one by Eva Cassidy

I can’t remember if I’ve already mentioned it. I met with some local musicians a few months ago via Band Mix and we’ve been meeting to play together regularly eversince. We’re practicing Rock/Blues covers currently, and haven’t had any gigs yet, but hopefully we’ll have enough ready material for some Open Mics soon. If you’re ever around South Wales, give us a shout .

Thanks Boris, that does sound interesting. I’ll try. I’m using a looper so there’s no chance of altering the tempo or the start of bars, but before/after the beat is doable.

I love Eva’s covers, but I give this one to Jeff Beck. He’s covered it many times, check out his live version at Ronnie Scotts with Joss Stone.

That was great, Erion! I remember the video of your OM performance, it stuck with me because I thought it was a really cool take on this song. Looks like you continue to take it further, I like it a lot!

Cool guitar and great tone as well. Would be interested in hearing your band’s version of this if you get an opportunity to record/post it.

I like Jeff Beck’s versions. I wasn’t aware of the one with Joss Stone. I had listened to the one with Rod Stuart. I stole one or two phrases from Jeff Beck in my solos on this song. His guitar work is hard to beat.

However, I prefer Eva’s vocal rendition of this song. She gives it a dimension that resonates more with me. I tried to emulate some of her vocal arrangement in my lead guitar work.

You can tell how good a song is by how many people have covered it. People Get Ready is one of my all time favourites.
And Curtis Mayfield paved the way for many famous guitarists that were influenced by his work. Jimmy was one.

Speaking of whom, I really want to learn All Along the Watchtower, another favourite of mine (JH’s version is better than BD’s IMO).

Thanks David.
We’re hoping to perform this and a couple of other songs in an Open Mic in the near future. I’ll post a recording then. It sounds a lot better with a band.
