D Shape Explorer Lesson

There was an exdrcise maybe in module 2 where we learned a sequence that went through shapes like this on D and A. Anybody remember the specifics?

I surprised myself a bit, by enjoying this lesson. I think my typical learning style is “tell me what I need to know, then I’ll do it” rather than this “explore via doing” activity. My favourite D chords I “discovered” are:

Dmaj7 Chord - Box diagram

Dmaj7 chord box

I found a cool chord sequence involving this one. D, Dmaj7, D7, G. It sounds jazzy.

And Daug:

If you play a D, then the Daug it sounds like the James Bond tension builder (maybe it is the James Bond tension builder). I used a different fingering for this chord pairing, to that shown in the diagram. I left the 1 and 2 fingers where they are for a D chord, moved the 3 to the G string and used the 4 on the B string. Then it’s an easy move back for the D.

Incidentally, in writing this post I discovered the chord library https://www.justinguitar.com/chords#a . In so so far as I can see there are no augmented chords in the library.

Oh yes - you’ve found a glorious move that brings a wonderful sound … and which is disappointingly called a line cliche.
On your B string you have chromatic movement D → C# → C → B

Different keys but you have the basis for key parts of Something (The Beatles), Kiss Me (Sixpence None The Richer) etc.

Try D bouncing back and forth to Daug as an intro to a song by ABBA.

We did “Something” in a band I was in 25+ years ago. I meant to suggest “Kiss Me” as a song for my current band, so that’s a good reminder to do so. “Sixpence non the richer” - that’s a great band name.

Thanks for the Abba tip too.

Hi Bill, it was a lesson in Grade 2, Module 11 Chord Freedom for Beginners

I’ve just found one that I kinda like. I’m keeping 2nd and 3rd fingers the same but barring the 3rd and 4th string on the 2nd fret with my index finger. No idea what it is though

D with an E base

I am strugling with my pinky on the 4th fret (adding). Is there any other excercise that might help with this? I will practice this more and then with the finger gym spend more time on the pinky combinations. For me the cord shape explorer lessons, capo for 2 and E shape bar chords is lighting a little light for my fretboard. Its like I am understanding more about the shapes and how everything connects. I still have a very looong way to go. I do enjoy this journey so much. Thank you from South Africa🤗
