Dan from Oregon

Hi all I am 64 years old.

Just started learning about 3 weeks ago. I tried once when I was like 9 or 10 but gave it up right away. Just figured I didnt have any aptitude.

Originally bought a guitar for my wife for Christmas but it was too big for her. I got her a smaller size and ended up keeping the first to try to learn on.

I never had thought I could learn to play but its really fun trying. This site is amazing for learning. My daughters boyfriend turned us on to it and we both love it.

I got serious callouses already and have learned quite a few chords already though I am struggling with chord changes to the F as well as strumming with a pick.

Looking forward to working through the modules.

Congrats Dan (and your wife I suppose). I hope you enjoy the journey. It can be slow at times, but definately very rewarding.

Welcome Dan!

As I frequently say to peeps here you’re never to old to rock n roll. Go for it.
Oh and check out our Portland Posse representative @Jenndye429 who’s another from Oregon. Lots to learn from Jenn and the gang !!

Nice to meet you Dan and welcome to our Community!

Me neither…I actually thought I’d be unable to learn…:woman_facepalming: that was silly of me I must admit! Here I am after a few years I can play something, which is not much yet but still way more than I could expect! And aiming to learn more!

Enjoy the journey and stick with us, learning together is more fun (and more effective too).

Thanks Toby! @TheMadman_tobyjenner

And welcome to you, Dan from a fellow Oregonian!

Great stuff. I’m living proof you don’t need the aptitude. It’s all learnable. The one minute chord change exercise is great. I learned the full barre F chord from the beginning and it was a struggle to get it sounding clean for quite a while but well worth it in the end. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Dan,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Nice to start it together with people around you…an extra plus with this amazing site to keep it fun and lasting…enjoy :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Hi Dan, welcome to the community. Just 3 weeks and trying to play the F chord. You must put in a lot of practice every day! Have fun learning a lot of songs.

Welcome, Dan, and let’s learn together with great enthusiasm. :sign_of_the_horns::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hello Dan.

Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. There a whole host of golden oldies over in the dog house.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
