Deftones - Mascara

Might not be everyones cup of tea. I’m a big fan of this band and their early stuff is pretty much the only stuff I can play without down tuning or getting a guitar with more strings.

Recorded in GarageBand, tone from my Quad Cortex (a modified one from the cloud, not my own), I removed the original guitar track with Moises.

I didn’t spend much time on this, it was a quick one to learn but the challenge for me has been working with such high gain, the noise from too much pressure or other strings ringing is tough to get under control. Working on some other stuff from this album, will hopefully see some improvements in the coming months. Maybe I’ll re-record this at some point…

Hey Rick. Well done. I know what you mean about playing with all that gain. I don’t really know this band or song but it sounded good to me. This prompted me to go back and look at a couple of your older AVOYP videos like Hey Joe. You’ve really improved. Keep up the good work

Sounds great Rick! I love how it goes to that drone G# at the end of the riff. Are you using some kind of sample and hold on the QC? Looking at your hands I think you’re in standard tuning, so you can’t just be using the open A string to do it… hmmm

Hi Rick I think you played that very well. Not the sort of piece I would normally look up but as part of this community we have to look away from our musical centre. This being the case my ears were beginning to “get it” a bit as the performance progressed. I can appreciate how many would like this.

Thanks for the comments.

@twistor59 it’s in Eb, although I pitch shifted one semitone on the cortex rather than tuning to it, and I have noise cancelling headphones so I couldn’t hear the acoustic noise from the strings.

Awesome job! I love the bleedover on the second verse, I wish they would have done it that way in the original. This caught my eye because I just recorded this (on bass) last month.

Excellent to produce that with such high gain, Rick. Thought your sense of timing and feel was on the money.

Very cool Rick, Deftones are way rad. Long road for those guys. Good stuff.

Yeah lots high gain all the way, super distorted and then at the end you get blasted with the mighty Fuzz hard. They used a Boss Hyper Fuzz for that.

Great upload. Thats for sharing.

Sweet base action. Thats was cool.

Oh I got that same shirt :call_me_hand:t2:

Well done Rick, sounds simple but not easy to play well. Something occurred to me, if you like this style you should have a listen to Bauhuas, if you have not already.

Thanks. I’ve not heard of them before, I’ll give them a listen.

Excellent - I have never heard this before but tour version is really intimidating - you nailed the timing which I guess is really hard and without it the song does not work - your version definitely groves! Great!
