Im having lots of difficulty with timing when playing lead guitar lines, even the most simple stuff, and even with drum backing tracks, like i literally can listen to something over and over and still not get the timing right
For example the oasis supersonic chicago intro, supposed to be really simple, i know what i need to listen out for, but when playing these little licks i get lost very easily
Any tips or anything i should practice to get better at this?
You might be able to slow down the speed and play it with the cover at the beginning. Eventually you could go faster and faster until you reach normal speed and then play it with the backing track.
I have had similar issues with getting timing and rhythms. Some people seem to be able to get it easier than others, but from what I understand it’s more who struggle than those that do not.
When trying to learn a solo then I have found the best method is to break it down bar by bar and learn each one and gradually put them together. Get the music file for the song and play it through some software like Transcribe which allows you to slow it right down, and loop a section at a time. I would start at 50% tempo and when you can play a bar accurately gradually increase the speed, if you make a mistake slow it down again and repeat until you get to full speed.
If you can get the tab for the song, look at it bar by bar and work out the easiest fingering for it, and practice bar by bar till it is internalised.
To help internalise the beat use a metronome and play just one note, at the same pulse, for example 1 2 3 4 again and again until you are in perfect time, then do 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & you could continue with triplets, and then modify each them dropping different beats but ensuring you keep in time.
To start with it is a slow process but it will get easier.
I also got Justin’s Rhytym Practice back k and have started on the exercises counting and clapping out the different rhythms. This helped as well.
Try playing one note (even a muted note) to the rhythm of be part you are learning. Once you hear the same rhythm introduce a couple other notes, then the rest of them.
Separating out the note learning from the rhythm learning can help with tricky bits.
Whenever somebody posts a question like this, I wonder if the piece is too difficult for their level. I had a look at this intro, it’s not that simple, tbh. Look at this bar, with 16th note triplets (taken from songsterr):
Not that easy! Maybe your expectations are too high? Can you play other simple solos correctly?
Anyway, if your problem is with the timing of individual licks, I would suggest finding a good tutorial accompanied with rhythm-notated TAB. If the TAB is not available, write it down yourself from the tutorial. Learn each phrase one at a time, going as slow as necessary and getting the rhythm for that phrase rock solid.
If you can play each phrase with the correct rhythm, but not the whole intro, you probably need to slow things down (possibly a lot). BTW, I would not introduce a backing track until you can comfortably play the whole thing correctly (possibly slowed down). A backing track (or metronome) will help you keep the overall bpm correct and constant, but it won’t help you get the timing for the phrases correct.
Anyway, if you are bit more specific about how you learn the solo and also what specific problems you have, I’m sure the experts around here can you give better advice. Actually, posting a video of yourself playing will also help – especially to assess if the piece you are attempting is appropriate to your level.
ive been playing electric for about half a year, though only recently ive actually started to learn more, and learn full songs ive never really played along to songs when playing lead guitar though. Im pretty comfortable with rythm guitar
I said easy because compared to the stuff i see in tabs for songs from bands like megadeth or guns n roses oasis seems easier, especially solos because they are usually based around one scale such as the one in supersonic but this might just be me having really high expectations
I can play solos such as supersonic, live forever, stairway to heaven, and expresso love from dire straits its just timing on the more complicated ones isnt consistent, especially if i dont have a lead guitar to listen out for (which isnt helpful because i am going to be the lead guitarist for the band im in, and so i need to try familiarise myself with timing and listening out to the other instruments more.
I probably do have high expectations because compared to solos from metallica or megadeth that i look at the one from supersonic by oasis seems alot more simple, and i feel like it is one of the easiest oasis have to offer
i can hit all the notes, and get the rythm by listening to the recording, its just timing so it fits with the rest of the band that i struggle with
